What voltage do railway signal lamps operate on in Australia?

A rail-working friend of mine gave me a lamp that had been replaced with a newer one - but still works. We have (for non-Aussies) a 240 Volt mains power supply (16 Amp I think) but was wondering if that'd be too much power to hook up to these?

Would a 12V battery work?

Does anyone know?

ANY help appreciated!

I am writing a book and am trying to determine if trains were a common mode of transportation during this time period, between 1855 and 1865.

I was wondering if you could buy a train engine that has been cleaned out, like the outer shell to put in your yard or at a park and what it would cost.

I live in a small town where the train goes through the main intersection. There are barrier beams and signal lights and bells at this intersection, so no cars can get around when a train is coming. But the train still sounds the horn when it comes through. Is this neccesary? I can understand the need to do it at uncontrolled intersections.

And why are they SO loud, even when they've passed? The trains that come through our town still sound the horns after they have passed, and sound just as loud going as they do coming! Can they have "directional" horns where most of the sound is projected forwards?

A conductor on a passenger train is punching tickets.

He comes to a man that has no ticket, and when asked why says, "I am a trainman too. I have a pass, but being late, I left the house in a hurry and I forgot it."

The conductor takes out his watch and asks, "What time do you have?"

The man looks at his watch and says, "It's a quarter to four."

The conductor, checking his own watch notes this is the correct time.

Even so, the conductor puts the man off the train at the next station because the conductor knows the man is not a railroader.

How did he know?
