Right now, I have no choice (am in junior high) but when I'm older I will use a bike for transportation. To carry stuff I will have 2 bikes--one to exercise with, the other with a wagon rolling behind to carry things. It will keep me fit and I won't contribute to global warming! When buying food I could carry a cooler in the wagon and put the food in there.

I wish there was some sort of ecofriendly flying device that you just snap on and use to go places, but no such thing exists.

Is it a good idea? Far-fetched? Just plain dumb? What do you think?

I'm really into saving the Earth--you know, recycling bottles, paper, and cans, and donating to organizations like Greenpeace--and I think this will help. And to prevent natural resources from being used up to make the bike, I'll go to a garage sale to get a pretty good, but secondhand bike.

I won't travel a lot, so getting places fast isn't really a problem. If I need to use a car, I'll borrow a friend's hybrid or something.

I am older. When I turned sixty this summer, I bought myself a new bike with electrical assist and a flat foot design. Flat foot moves the pedals forward just a bit, so I can sit straight up and put my feet on the ground while seated. We need to start designing bikes for older riders as well as young people.
I think you are very wise and a thoughtful young person. I You have good ideas and a great attitude. I have an old truck that I use more and more infrequently, but think I could get by with renting city share too. Maybe someone will invent a back pack to let you fly, hopefully using solar powered batteries. I would advise you not to limit your desire to see the world by feeling you need to limit travel. Travel is different from commuting everyday to work. That would best avoided.
Public transportation makes more sense than even the best hybrid. But for it to really work, it has to be available 24/7 to all the places we need to go.
Another way to save the earth will be to consider what you do to make a living. I lived in the Detriot when I was your age. I decided not to work in the auto industry, because I did not want to have to defend what seemed like a bad idea, in order to keep my job, or make my living. I suggest you also think about how you can earn a living, by helping society and the earth, and not having to defend something silly to protect yourself. I wish for you a happy life, in a healthy society on a healthy planet.

you are on the right path, but I think sometimes you need a car, everything else is fine and I do it too, it's so refreshing to hear that you are aware and want to do something about it. But at least get a prius, you might need a car for an emergency, the bike thing is too much. You are doing enough already, going to buy groceries in bike is no fun at all. You can get skin cancer by being exposed that much to the sun, don't overdoit, there's the rest of us to help the cause.

:)

I think its good that you want to do your part but, I think you will change your mind about riding a bike everywhere especially for your safety!!! Unless you are rich enough to not have to work. And if you do travel on your bike to work, what are the chances that your work will be close enough that you can do so? If your work is 40 miles away & its 90 degrees outside I hope you have showers where you are working because you will be turning everyone green. Traveling to the grocery store would be ok, as long as you decided you was not ever going to have a family to shop for. And if you could accomplish this, what grit sandpaper would it take to get the calisus off of your butt? I agree we can all do our part but, there are limits.

I think it's good that you're aware of our environment, but I don't think your approach is practical. These days, few people live within 5 miles of their workplace, so biking to work is difficult (if not impossible) for most. Also, shopping using a bike would be impractical because of the distance and the difficulty in carrying your purchases home.

There are a lot of more practical ways to help our planet... like carpooling, recycling trash, not littering, etc. Also, you may someday invent a revolutionary new fuel or commuting system that solves a lot of our current problems. Good luck, and keep thinking!

I used to live in the suburbs where you need a car to get things done. When I found a job that I really liked I looked for, and found, a place to live within walking distance. And where there are grocery stores nearby and located between my job and my home. I hated being "married" to a car. I also depend on mass transit to get where I need to go if walking is not an option. Good luck and don't be discouraged.

you go girl your on the right track, if you can get a few more your age and then they can get a few more you just might get the whole thing going again it is great to see that some one who is in the next generation has an interest in some thing other then them selves, start out slow and go from there, don't try to take to much on at one time public transpiration is a good thing to use if you can and pull the wagon and walk when you go to the store it will be easier to do and go ahead and ride your bike

Whatever floats your boat. I think those are pretty dumb ideas though.

How about getting a degree in engineering. Once out of college, invent a car that can run on gas, ethonal, natural, electricity, etc. Then find some investors to put more ethonal, natural gas stations in your local market. Hire a mechanic and teach them how to convert customers existing cars to run on the alternative fuels. Then expand into other states to take advantage of those markets.

If you really want to help, create ways in which regular consumers can have a choice in what they have their cars run on. You'll see that once gas companies have competition, you'll get better fuels that burn cleaner, have greater output, and give you better prices.

Nothing wrong with saving the planet and making money while you're at it.

Why don't you carpool with others in your apartment building to the grocery? Or, look into the Smart Car. Bikes aren't always the safest transportation around. People on bikes don't obey traffic laws and people in cars don't always look out for bikes.

It's a good start, you might even consider saddle bags. You can take them off when you are not using them. Instead of buying 2 bikes just buy you a used 15 speed mountain bike. It will cover both ends.

It's a good idea but I'd save the bikes for exersizing, you should buy this car called the Zap-X, it's completely elertric and olny cost 3.50$ to recharge.
