I guess that every place might call things differently, but in general:

Fried Wontons are just that. Wonton wrappers fried, plain, nothing in them. (Wontons themselves are basically a type of pasta made usually from just flour, water & salt). One of the dishes the chinese place down the street from me used to serve came with a box of fried wontons to go with it.

Crab Rangoons are fried wontons with a crab & cream cheese filling. (And I suspect that the 'cheese filled wontons' that someone before me described are like crab rangoons without the crab).

Wonton wrappers (unless fried up plain) have many filled uses, like potstickers (filled, then pan fried on one side and then steamed). Sometimes the filled dumplings are just steamed. And they can be fried with the filling inside (you can put the same filling that you put in egg rolls). And there is wonton soup.

Fried wontons vary from restaurant to restaurant.
Some are filled with nothing, others may contain cheeses, others still meats or vegetables. (I prefer the latter.)

Buy a set and find out what your place's fried wontons contain.

In theory, (deep) fried wontons have a meat-and-spices filling, just as boiled ones do. But sometimes they just have another sheet of wonton wrapper wadded up inside instead of meat.

This from the same cost-cutting entrepreneurs who realized you could skip the expense of (fake) crab if you changed the name to "cheese-filled wonton".

By the way, boiled wontons are authentic Chinese food, but fried wontons are a creation for non-Chinese customers. As are any Chinese dishes that have cheese in them. And I don't think Crab Rangoon has any real connection with the city of Rangoon. Good thing, since this is the capital of that southeast Asian dictatorship that's been in the news lately--Myanmar, formerly known as Burma.

if you've had wonton soup, it's the same, but deep fried... a wonton is filled with ground pork, spices, and shitake mushrooms.

Crab Rangoon is filled with crab meat and cream cheese

My family loves crab rangoon.

The chineese place in town changed the name of their crab rangoon to fried cheese wontons.

I think there is a recipe for them somewhere.

My friend told me about the recipe before i even knew what they were.

but I didn't pay much attention.
