ok, well this is my first halloween season as a vegetarian (so i'm like waaay more aware of the types of things that are in candies), so that pretty much means no candy corns, skittles, ect. and i'm kind of bummed about it.

: ( i mean i know that i'm being healthier and what not, but i feel kind of left out because all of my friends are like chowing down on gelatin filled halloween candy and i'm just like sitting there trying to resist my temptations by thinking of the nasty gelatin.

well i guess my question is.....any advice? or reassurance?

ps: i know that vegetarians can eat gelatin, but i choose not to, i mean in my opinion it's the same concept..the animal had to die.

gelatin is in skittles, and gelatin is ground up animal bones (to answer your question)

I agree with me and traceilicious... everyone should be doing what makes them happy. I'm not a vegetarian for the title, I'm a vegetarian because I don't want to eat animals that have suffered! That's it! If some people feel okay eating a few skittles then so be it! And if you don't feel right doing it then don't. There are tons of other options so go with those. Good luck!

Side note: I don't understand why so many people here judge others so much! Even an omnivore that avoids eating meat just one day a week is still making a difference... that's better than nothing isn't it?! I don't know, I'm just saying no one is perfect so why preach and put thumbs down to people just because they aren't doing things the way you would. As long as you do things your way and are happy then live and let live!

Granted I am not a vegetarian so take what I have to say in that context. I eat very little meat. Holidays or other family gatherings when someone else is cooking I eat meat. I also eat fish.

I don't buy chicken, pork, beef, etc. But I don't worry about minute ingredients. Okay yes, there may be a small abount of cow in your skittles. But how much? Will you really consume the equivalant of one steak in a life time of skittle eating? And being it is made from the bones that would be thrown out anyway, no cow died for the skittles. The cow died for the roast beef, T-bone steak and ribeyes. The bones are just a waste product put to use.

Send in the thumbs down, I don't care. But I for one can see the difference between eating veal and skittles.

I'd ignore the PETA list, as they get a lot of stuff WRONG. I was pretty angry when I discovered the Lemonheads they said were vegan have beeswax.

There's a candy called Mamba, which is like a vegan version of Starburst. I've seen it at local 7-11s, but you can also get it from Pangea (www.veganstore.com). I asked, and the glycerin in Goldenberg's Peanut Chews is vegetable glycerin. As far as I can tell, they're vegan.

Just don't eat any candy at all. Its basically all bad for you and there's no health benefit what so ever. If you have to eat something sweet , try some hard, sugar free candy. Look in the diabetic isle at the supermarket. There are also many products made with no milk and lactose free. There are plenty of options out there, you just have to go look for them! Good luck!

Try and find or make your own treats. Bake some cupcakes or some other tasty dessert or find candy without gelatin.

when my sis turned vegetarian, i was a bit.. well.. feeling odd. but whenever i see like.. beef or something i feel like i gotta barf.. thats why i stick to Empire Chicken and Hot Dogs (hebrew national is good too). But your a vegetarian, so heres my answer.

My family went out to get a pizza. Yes a pizza. That was because we are jewish and didnt have any candy to give to the 25 year old ghetto people who came at our door demanding for food

We went far away to get high quality pizza. That is what I recommend.

Vegetarians do not eat gelatin so saying that they can sort of makes them not a vegetarian. Anyhow....there are lots of vegetarian friendly candy. My favorite is Swedish Fish.
