In the Judeo-Christian religions, we have the 10 commandments. One of the commandments is : Thou shall not kill (often phrased in a variety of ways). Does the Qur’an, or any other Islamic writings, also have a similar commandment from God? If so, where is it written and how is it phrased?

Thank you for your serious answers.

I would like to thank all of you who gave honest and helpful answers. I really appreciate your input.

I do have a side not to Cheir: When I posted this question, I was chose my words carefully to make sure that I got my question our without causing offense to anybody. If you read it again, I even said “Thou shall not kill (often phrased in a variety of ways).” This allows that is printed and quoted in a variety of ways. If you do a Google search for “Thou shall not kill”, you will see that it is widely accepted in common usage.

It is too bad that you seemingly felt the need to criticize me for your 2 points instead of offering a constructive answer to this question.

The term Judeo-Christian is a term used to describe the body of concepts and values which are thought to be held in common by Judaism and Christianity, and typically considered (sometimes along with classical Greco-Roman civilization) a fundamental basis for Western legal codes and moral values. In particular, the term refers to the common Old Testament/Tanakh (which is a basis of both moral traditions, including particularly the Ten Commandments); and implies a common set of values present in the modern Western World. It does not mean Jews who believe in Jesus.

I am also Jewish.

The whole Quran is a similar commandment having even laws that the Judeo-Christian religions don't have, like inheriting laws, In Islam the source of laws is the Quran and Hadith (Sayings and commandments of the prophet Mohammed (PBUH)).

The Quran again brought stories of the Israelis saying that God says the law for them was that if they kill a soul without justification, it is as if they have killed all of mankind. I remembered reading somewhere where an Islamic scholar says this is also applicable to Muslims in cases of unjustified killing, and God knows best.

In Islam, the Sharia of Legal Islamic Law upholds the value of human life very highly. Combat that has to take place must occur away from residential areas and involve only the soldiers, while women, children and other civilians must be protected and even buildings, cattle and menas of livelihood should not be destroyed.

Even the combat or war that has to take place must have a number of criterias fulfilled-- among other in cases where the Muslims are displaced from their homes (hence scholars use this to justify the resistance in Palestine), the Muslim army must be similar in might and strength as the enemy (thus to ensure equal chance of victory), and the arms used must not cause the victims to be burnt as in using bombs, as Sharia says only Allah has the right to burn his creations as in the hellfire.

Another concept is blood money in Islam, but I can't really remember the exact order of the verse.

Thus taking away of life in Islam is highly regulated, and only the authorities, after fulfilling the criterias, can make such pronouncement. Killing a life wantonly without justification is one of the big sins in Islam, I think just after the unpardonable sin of polytheism.

The verses used as as a basis for the Sharia Laws, together with the sayings and actions of the Holy Messenger in the Hadis Literature, are numerous and exists in various places in the Quran. The Sharia is important to derive rulings where not only Quran and Hadis are used, but Qiyas (Inferences from past rulings) and Ijma' Ulama(ie Scholar's consenus of opinions) are also employed.

The problem with the Muslim world today like that promulgated by the Wahabbis/Salafees, is that they ignore Qiyas and Ijma Ulama, but only take Quran and Hadis. Thus literal understanding of the Quran and Hadis without consulting the works of the majority of scholars (ulama') who are of the Sunni school can be a dangerous thing.

Dr Khaled Abou Fadhel of UCLA has written much about jihad and all its ramifications.

You might wanna check the links below they are helpful.

And God knows best.

There are many verses that talk about sanctity of life in the Quran, as ultimately all people are created by our common Creator, whatever name we call him.

Specifically the verse that comes to my mind is Chapter 5 verse 32 which is talking about the killing of Abel by Cain, which goes in essence "murdering one person is as if one has murdered all of humanity, and saving one life is as if one has saved all of humanity". The context is that not only Cain killed Abel, but everyone in his lineage till the Day of Judgmment, which symbolically is at least half or even all of humanity.

Similarly it is well understood that all people are made, and nourished by the Almighty. Thus killing a person is as if wanting to turn the Hand of the Almighty by your action, which is a very serious affront to the basic foundations and principles of Islam which teach that the Will of the Almighty must be obeyed.

Killing is allowed in Islam only in self defence or as punishment for capital crimes such as murder or rape. Even there killing is the last resort. In the laws of battle the rules of engagement are clear. If the soldier fighting you has turned back and is running away, then the law is NOT to chase him. If his weapon is broken, then he is to be captured rather than killed. If he is wounded, then the enemy soldier should be provided the same medical treatment and given food and water as your own soldiers. The Prophet summed up the treatment of the enemy soldier and how he is to be treated in the following words "remember that the soldier in your hands was created by Allah, and he possibly has a mother, a wife or a daughter waiting for him to return to them just as your family is waiting for you"

Thus killing is a last resort option. Even in cases of murder, if the victim's family would take blood money and spare the life of the murderer it is accepted according to the laws of Islam to spare the murderer. Only in the case of rape there concession are made very seldom, as anyone who abuses the honor of a woman is destined for execution, as females are ultimately the mothers of humanity and for a few minutes of pleasure the person was willing to risk the creation of a new life that he would then abandon as if it was worthless!!

I hope this makes sense to you.

There are plenty of games with words.

And plenty of examples of the wrong answer.

My favorite example that King used: that all MEN are created equal. In those times, a woman wasn't a man, and a slave was not a man, s/he was a chattel.

So there is trickery and deception in words and translations.

There is NO such thing as a Judeo-Xian religion.

The commandment is "do not murder." The church changed it when it was adapting the Hebrew Bible to church doctrine.

Yes, the commandment "do not murder/do not kill" is in the Qur'an many times--specifically in the 10 commandments, which according to Islamic tradition, G-d gave to Moses (Musa) on Mt. Sinai.

No. via fact the u . s . isn't following Sharia regulation, we Muslims ought to abide through their regulations. they have regulation anti-polygamy rules right here, i think of. yet maximum folk do not marry 4 women individuals in recent times besides. and that they have freedom of speech rules right here too. Which i think of is inaccurate, no person must be allowed to mock human beings's ideals, yet however. regulation of the land.

Fraction of Holy Qura'n covers Ten Commandments.
Al Qura'n is full of wise commandments.

About Killing:
Qur'an: ". . . Do not take life, which Allah has made sacred, except through justice and the law. He orders this so that you may acquire wisdom" (6:151) and, "Do not take life, which Allah has made sacred, except for a just cause. If anyone is killed unjustly, We allow his heir (to seek justice) but do not allow him to exceed bounds when it comes to taking life, for he is helped (by the law)" (17:33). According to the Qur'an, killing a person unjustly is the same as killing all of humanity, and saving a person is the same as saving all humanity. (See 5:32.)

Fight Against Terrorism in Islam:
"Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits, for Allah does not love transgressors. Kill them wherever you catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out, for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter. But do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there. If they fight you, kill them. Such is the reward of those who reject faith. But if they cease, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Fight them until there is no more tumult or oppression and justice and faith in Allah prevail. If they cease, engage in hostility only against those who practice oppression. There is the law of equality of for the prohibited months, and so for all things prohibited. If any one transgresses the prohibition against you, transgress likewise against him. But be conscious of Allah and know that He is with those who restrain themselves" (2:190-194).

Islam does not allow or sanctify the killing any innocent person regardless of his or her religion. According to the Qur'an and Hadith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad) life is sacrosanct.

Old Testament about War:
In Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Torah, Moses shares this message from God as the Israelites prepare to enter the Promised Land: "I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the long-haired heads of the enemy." (Deut. 32:42)

"When the Lord, your God, brings you into the land that you are entering to possess, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and stronger than you. And when the Lord, your God, delivers them before you and you defeat them, destroy them utterly. Make no covenant with them and show no mercy to them" (Deuteronomy 7:1-2).

"When your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own soul, entices you secretly, saying 'Let us go and serve other gods,' . . . you shall kill him, your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. You shall stone him to death with stones, because he sought to draw you away from the Lord your God. . . " (Deuteronomy 13: 6-10)

You may fight in the cause of GOD against those who attack you, but do not aggress. GOD does not love the aggressors. (Quran 2:190)

You may kill those who wage war against you, and you may evict them whence they evicted you. Oppression is worse than murder. Do not fight them at the Sacred Masjid, unless they attack you therein. If they attack you, you may kill them. This is the just retribution for those disbelievers. (Quran 2:191)

You may also fight them to eliminate oppression, and to worship GOD freely. If they refrain, you shall not aggress; aggression is permitted only against the aggressors. (Quran 2:193)
