LONDON: The family of Stephen Bennett, the British tourist found battered and hung from a tree in a village in Roha near Mumbai, has claimed that the backpacker was abducted from the beach resort where he was staying.

Bennett, 40, had expressed fears for his safety in phone calls home. According to his parents and sister, they tried to alert the authorities in India, but no one responded.

Bennett had travelled to Goa for a two-week winter break. His body, covered with cuts and bruises, was found 200 miles away in a jungle near Roha. His family is at a loss to know how he came to be there, but fear he was abducted in Goa and taken away in a car.

A friend of the family told the Mail , “He rang on December 6, just three days into his holiday, to say he was very worried about two men he had met on the beach. He said they were being smarmy and he was not comfortable with them. They knew that he was on his own and he was worried about going back to his hotel room.’’

“In a later phone call, he said he had been taken against his will. Stephen’s parents could hear two men speaking to him in the background in broken English. They were snapping at him.”

Bennett is the father of two girls aged 11 and eight, who are said to be devastated. He is separated from their mother. An actor-turned-self-employed builder, he was an experienced traveller and had visited Egypt, China and Thailand. He worked as an actor in his 20s, and appeared in a film with Joan Collins and Timothy Spall.

The motive of the abduction is unclear, however. The victim still had $300 cash in his pockets when he was found. Four men have been questioned about the death, but Bennett’s relatives say they are unhappy with the story being put out by police that he was attacked after he began talking to a villager who could not understand him and feared he was going to rape her. If I save a Yahoo News article for reference, I always have to delete the time (which is useless to readers IMHO) and add the year.
It would be a lot easier if Yahoo would just include the year.

I made an Honest mistake as a result of poor publicity, In none of the speeches I caught on TV of the opening no mention was made that the only criteria was that of family income. A lot of other South Africans also jumped to the same conclusion I made. TvV news this morning showed a shot of Oprha with girls from different ethnic groups.
My orriginal comment was never as a result of racist thinking, no one can accuse me of being racist as I was one of the first mixed marrages in South Africa.

I am very interested in news and perspective from other nations since our own Media almost always focus on the same stories. I like watching the BBC news because it covers stories I would not otherwise hear about. I would watch the italian news .. if I spoke Italian. I have always wondered about this. I am serious about this question what is the most common way to refer to yourselves? What news programs or websites do you look at?

It is about US History. It has music like playing and audio clips of like 200 events from the 20th century in America. Like MLK asassination, JFK, and Watergate. It is a solemn sounding song.
I really like it because it goes through the history of the country of the US.
Hope someone is able to help me! Best Answer and help gets 10 points!

When I was a kid, I used to hear a common saying, and it was "don't believe everything you hear or read".

I want to know if this is the same thought today.

It seems that everyone takes the stories (with or without the spin) of the media as golden truth (or as some say "the gospel truth"). I would suspect that this is true, as many people don't attempt to seek out the truth, and accept everything printed, published or posted - especially when it's about certain politicians.

What is odd, is this seems to be the case, even when the facts or the truth are later brought out, and correcting or defeating the initial story. It seems that the initial story, even when proven wrong, is the story that many believe and insist on holding as the truth.

So do you think the public believes everything the media says? and do you think that the media is more prone to truth or propaganda? Or is it simply that the people want to believe what the media is saying, even if it's not the truth?
