The buttons on my daughters tamagotchi have stopped working, it's stuck on a unhatched egg. Any ideas?

When it wasn't responding and was about to die, we thought the battery was dying. We replaced it, a new egg appeared but has just been dancing about for three days! The buttons have stoppped making a noise as well.
