Ever befriended someone out of pity, then regretted it, because they became a clingy, smothering lump of need?

And then you sorta knew (too late) why everybody else avoided them, and you stopped answering their calls, and pretended not to be home when they knocked on your door, and even considered moving or changing jobs just to get away from them?
