I just read answers to another question about tipping, and people really don't get the purpose behind it. I am server and we $2.65 an hour and work the rest for tips. The standard tip is 17% right now, but anywhere from 15-20% is the norm. The reason servers are not paid more hourly is to keep food and drink prices at the respective prices they are currently at. It actually cost restaurants a great deal to be open on a daily basis. Also, tipping is a way to ensure your server actually cares about their job. If I was hourly why would I care about what you need and what you want and be nice about it, when so many customers are rude. Just think of drive thru people and other people who work in customer service who are not so nice. After all T.I.P.S. stands for to ensure prompt service. BTW these "servants" give up nights, weekends and holidays for you.
