I just read answers to another question about tipping, and people really don't get the purpose behind it. I am server and we $2.65 an hour and work the rest for tips. The standard tip is 17% right now, but anywhere from 15-20% is the norm. The reason servers are not paid more hourly is to keep food and drink prices at the respective prices they are currently at. It actually cost restaurants a great deal to be open on a daily basis. Also, tipping is a way to ensure your server actually cares about their job. If I was hourly why would I care about what you need and what you want and be nice about it, when so many customers are rude. Just think of drive thru people and other people who work in customer service who are not so nice. After all T.I.P.S. stands for to ensure prompt service. BTW these "servants" give up nights, weekends and holidays for you.

Most people who serve are working their way through college. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice that I obtained while serving.

When I started waitressing the min was 2.01 per hour. I do understand where you are coming from, I actually understand both sides. I still occassionally waitress if I'm between jobs but I choose to waitress at Hotels or Golf courses where the min pay rate is between $6 & $8 an hour plus your tips. Many servers do give up holidays and weekends to perform they're job. I am a Computer Data Analyst now, I have a Masters in Business and an AutoCad degree...............but my heart still loves waitressing more than any of those Corporate jobs. The problem with some is people get one or numerous bad waiters or waitresses and then they treat htem all bad. Some are just tight wads............. take the good with the bad............ most of the time you will get a good customer that will make it all worth it............. Don't ever give up on performing good service............ I have recieved tips of $100.00 on a $23.00 bill.......... You might want to try a Hotel - the people are usually wonderful!

If the service is good, I tip well. It the service was outstanding I tip better. If the service was poor or the server was rude. The tip goes down, sometimes to $0. In the area I live, waiters and waitresses feel like they deserve a tip, even when they are rude and the service is lousy.

People are ignorant because they just are. I always tip 15% at least.( unless server is ignorant). Just do your best job & hope for the best.I try to cultivate a miniature relationship with server also..to insure good service..& insider info like " How's the fish today? said with eye contact. I appreciate a tactful steering comment toward a better choice if warranted..The only control you have is to be bright eyed cheerful helpful...& I am sure you will get the best result possible.

I have no problem tipping 15-20% if the service is good.

Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.

If a server wants a generous tip, they should at least be pleasant and check back occasionally to see if the diners need anything such as a drink refill.

That's the one thing that will slash a server's tip in my case....letting me wash down my food with water as the ice melts in my glass.

If a person works for tips, then they'd better damned well be good at the job.

I'm not really worried if my server likes their job.If I get bad service I just won't go back to the place.I think the "servants" don't really give up holidays and such for me,they do it because they need the money.I usually leave $5.00 at a regular restaurant and $10 at a nice restaurant providing I got good service,if I don't I leave nothing. If the server doesn't like their job they should find another one or go to college.

Because a lot of people have never worked the business, so most don't really know..... I always try to tip, especially if it's outstanding service I tip more. But if I have to wait for a drink or ask you to bring it......the tip goes down.

I have a friend who is a waitress. She says the same thing. I will give a tip every time. I am always nice and respectful to the waiters and waitresses, and I never complain if my food isn't right(like if they get the order somewhat wrong). I have never given a tip lower than the normal, and most of the time I give more.

i serve on weekend too and i only get 2.15 per hour. i feel ripped off if i only get 10%. People usually give me 18-20 though so it makes up for the bad tippers. some people are just stuck in the old days.....

I am not ignorant. I simply pay people what >>>> I <<<<<<<
think they DESERVE. A tip REALLY means that you have gone beyond what was expected.
Nobody is giving up anything for me.....they have a job. I also have a job.
