Anatomically referred to as ventriculus ,the term gastric mill is also used & suits the organ best.It is a thick walled muscular structure along the intestinal tract, its function is the grinding of undigestible matter to a form where it can be digested & nutrients easily assimilated.
The gizzard is lined by a stiff inner later that is thrown into folds ,grit & sharp stones swallowed by the bird lie trapped here & along with the strong muscular action of the gizzard walls ,help in grinding hard indigestible matter .
