insulin is given subcutaneously with a 5/16 in needle. In order fo intramuscular injections you need at least an 1 1/4 inch usually we use 1 1/2 inch at hospitals.

I lived with a diabetic and he used to inject himself in the arm the thigh or the stomache/abs. Sometimes he would inject himself in the butt as well. But, he would only go in a few centemeters under the skin. Not sure if that is deep enough for muscle.

For the person who gave the thumbs down. Here is an article on where to inject yourself and I also list the source.

Injection Site Selection

The most common injection site is the abdomen (or stomach). The back of the upper arms, the upper buttocks or hips, and the outer side of the thighs are also used. These sites are the best to inject into for two reasons:

They have a layer of fat just below the skin to absorb the insulin, but not many nerves - which means that injecting there will be more comfortable than injecting in other parts of your body.

They make it easier to inject into the subcutaneous tissue, where insulin injection is recommended.

No, diabetic insulin syringes are meant to be Sub-cutaneous, (in the fat that is under the skin). This causes it to be less painful and it also prevents the insulin from entering your system very fast and lasting for a few minutes instead of a few hours.

Now on the other hand, Glucogen, is meant to be intramuscular, even though it works just as well if you inject it sub-cutaneously like insulin, (my endocrinologist told me this). But Glucogen is not an insulin, it is used when a diabetic falls unconciene due to severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Merry Christmas! :D

It is just a subcutaneous injection. The needle length is half inch or even quarter inch. The quarter inch is for infants and small children I expect.

Cheers

Fat. I have very strong stomach muscles and put it there ONCE, sort of on the side, when I was younger. I do feel I hit muscle, and it was NOT fun.

i believe it must be in to the muscle, but that would be a great question for a pharmasist or a doctor.
