HIV1, the virus that causes most cases of AIDS in the world, originated in chimpanzees, not monkeys. HIV2, which causes only a few cases of AIDS in the world, probably originated from a monkey called the sooty mangabey.

Chimpanzees that get the virus HIV1 don't usually get the immune system illness AIDS that humans get from it: they can often remain quite healthy, despite carrying the virus.

There are numerous theories about the origins. There is a similar mutation in the bloodstream of that type of monkey. I forget the name, green monkey I believe. And no it is not lethal to them, it works differently in their bloodstream. In fact it may not even be HIV, it could be something totally different. They have no conclusive evidence to say if the virus mutated to what it is now from that strain. There are now 3 different types of HIV btw.

There were also bodies exumed dying from 'mysterious deaths' as far back as 1900 and some have tested HIV+. This baffles experts even further. We just don't know where it came from. There is also an element of germ warfare from the early 1900's as well that is very similar to HIV. So the theory is it could have been designed by the governments but there just isnt enough information to know how or when it all started. Hope that helps, I am sure I sparked more questions than I answered.

That's the generally accepted theory and it is plausible in itself and therefore possible.

No-one really knows for sure and there are other theories, all of which are equally plausible and therefore possible.
