my mom and i have both noticed that im eating more and more lately but i don't seem to be any heavier, instead it seems that on the scale i am lighter.
i heard that this is a symptom of diabetes..no one in my family has it, but my dad has a high blood sugar level...
also, right now, im living in an area where its not that easy to contact a doctor, so could someone tell me some more symptoms and signs to watch out for in case i do have diabetes? is there anything you can do about it without going to the doctor?
o gawd...i better not have diabetes

generally yes...unexplained weight loss or gain is a symptom.
You would also notice the following:
excessive thirst
Frequent urination
blurred vision
fatigue
numbess or tingling in hands or feet or both

Eating more is not really a symptom; unless you have really been dropping pounds, it wouldn't really fit. I lost 40 lbs in 2 months, so that will give you an idea.
Diabetes symptoms:
* Frequent urination
* Excessive thirst
* Extreme hunger
* Unusual weight loss
* Increased fatigue
* Irritability
* Blurry vision
A good thing to do is go get a glucose meter. In the morning, test your blood sugar before eathing or drinking anything.
If it's not around 100, +/- 20 on either side, you could have a problem. If it's above 130, you may be tending towards Type II diabetes...that is not to common at your age. Low glucose levels, below 80, would tend to mean you are Type I (usually congenital...you are born with it).
Exactly 2 hours after the start of a meal, test and see what it your level is...if it's over 160-170, you may have a problem.
If the numbers are abnormal, go see a Dr...no matter how hard it is.
You don't want the complications of Diabetes, and if you are type 1, you are in SERIOUS trouble without insulin.

i have diabetes (type 1) this is the type of diabetes not caused by obesity. (type two is caused by being overwieght) i am a little younger than you. yes losing weight is a symptom. when i was first diagnosed, i lost 20 lbs in a short amount of time. some other symptoms are drinking tons of water and urinating a lot. the urine might be very sticky. if you have a drug store nearby you can buy something called ketostix. these test to see the sugar level in ur urine. also you could buy an inexpensive blood glucose meter at a drugstore or grocery store. when you test ur blood it should be between 70 and 140. you should only worry if it is nowhere near between those two numbers. if the numbers are below 50 or above 200 you should definately go see a doctor asap. they will probably send you to the nearest hospital with a diabetes clinic. hope all goes well.

The most common and defining symptoms of diabetes are thirst, frequent urination and hunger. Warm, dry skin may indicate that your sugar is high.
Where on earth are you that you can't contact a doctor, friggin' Mars? The longer you go without getting this corrected (if you are in fact diabetic) the worse off you are going to be. You can't do anything about diabetes until the doctor puts you on the correct medication. You could always watch your diet though.
Thyroid disorders may also be to blame for an increased appetite with no weight gain. You also say that you are 14 so this may only be because you are growing. It's probably nothing. You may just have a quick metabolism.

Riquevol listed a bunch of the symptoms so I wont bother to repeat them. I just wanted to urge you to find a way to see a doctor. I know you said it is not that easy because of where you are but it is important that you find out asap. The reason I say this is because at your age if you are diabetic than you are most likely type 1 which means that you would need insulin in order to treat the diabetes. Until you find out try not to stress too much because stress can affect blood sugar levels. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions. I hope this helps. Good Luck and God Bless!

I drank a bunch of water, and slept the whole time, and lost 15 lbs in a week (This was 1 day before i went to the doctor) when i got there i blacked out. my Blood sugar was over 700. 0.o (so this is when it is gets really really bad)
also i had gotten dry,rough skin on my neck, months before this.
You really should go to the doctor though and get it checked out.

Well, weight loss is a 'symptom' of MANY things, not just diabetes. Your also 14, your body is changing in multiple ways, boys arent the only ones who gain the appetite of a wild bear, your body is probably evening out all of your extra weight and getting rid of what it doesent need, this can happen very rapidly in some people. The rapid weight loss can explain the increased hunger. one side of your body is saying sell, the other is saying buy...

Type one is also called juvenile diabetes, it usually occurs in younger people but it doesn't have to. It means your pancreas is completely dead and you need to be on injectable or inhaled insulin. There is no way to control it without one of those types of insulin. Exercise is obviously good for you, and so is healthy eating, but it is not going to fix it.
Type two is usually adult-onset, but doesn't have to be. This means your pancreas is working, but it is not producing enough insulin. You can take either pills or injectable or inhaled insulin, and you can help it with a healthy weight and healthy food and exercise.
But you need help for both of them. But since you are 14, you might just be growing and needing more food. But go see a doctor as soon as you can, at least call one today, like at a hospital.

type 1 I think is the insulin one and the other is diet one. you can keep it at bay if you watch what you are eating and do it all the time. not too much sugar ever never drink pop that has sugar in it. you have to watch carbs and all the stuff to maintain it right. the one with insulin means you have none and have to have shots for it. that is the worse one and you have to chance with it. if you dad has high sugar level i hope hes doing what ever the doc said. it can mess up kidneys liver eyes heart and all that stuff. you have to be mindful of this and watch out. you can have limb cut off also. so watch out and be careful.

I'd say get on the American Diabetic Assoc.
website...That really helped me...Also look in your phone book & see if there is a listing under physicians that you can call a help line to find a specific doctor or endocrinologist. Hope this helps.
