Pneumonia is the inflammation of the lung tissue that results from an infection. In reality, pneumonia(the actual disease) itself is not contagious...the bacteria/viruses that can cause pneumonia, however, can be contagious. For example, the bacteria Haemophilus Influnzae can cause pneumonia, but it can also cause epiglottitis. So, you could contract the bacteria/virus causing someones pneumonia, but that does not mean you will also get pneumonia (you might contract the bug and get a simple head cold). Avoid close contact until the underlying cause of the persons pneumonia is determined because many of the pneumonia causing organisms are contagious. The organism that causes walking pneumonia (Mycoplasma pneumoniae) is highly contagious.

Highly contagious. Worse, there is no cure; the best way to not get it is to stay away from those that have it. The problem is, most people today get pneumonia while in the hospital. Several of my cousins died from pneumonia while being treated for "minor things" such as a broken leg.
For the very young, the elderly, others at high risk, there are shots which help prevent pneumonia.

Pneumonia is not contagious. It is caused by unused lobes of the lungs. For instance, it you have a cold and lay in bed for days on end you will not expand your lungs to their full capacity and they will start to flatten and this allows bacteria in your lungs to grow (PNEUMONIA). This bacteria is normal in your lungs, but when given the chance it will grow it causes pneumonia. Don't worry about it being contagious though, even if you cough up a wad of sputum it's considered sterile. Unless you have a virus or T.B. This could present its self as pneumonia. Either way go to the doctor because pneumonia shouldn't be taken lightly. It is the 4th leading cause of death in America. I hope this helps you, thanks and God Bless.

Depends what caused the pneumonia and whether the person exposed has an immune system well enough to fight it off. There are many varieties of pneumonia and it's too complicated to say just yes or no.

It is contagious for everyone. Pneumonia contains viruses which as we all know can be transmitted by an infected person coughing or sneezing on a person, sharing drinking glasses and utensils, and/or when a person touches used tissues of an infected person.

Pneumonia is not contagious. Colds are contagious-they can turn into pneumonia, but pneumonia itself is not.

No, not by its self. Pneumonia is often the result of a weakened immune system, occuring only under the right conditions.
