My girlfriend has herpes on her mouth. We kiss when she has them and i never get a cold sore. Does that mean i can't get them? and if i can't get them there if she goes down on me and gives me oral sex, will i get herpes on my genitals?

The only way to know for sure if you are susceptible to a new herpes infection is to get a blood test that can detect and differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2.

Many people carry the infection WITHOUT showing any symptoms. You may have been infected by kissing her, or you may have picked it up (like the majority of people) as a child through nonsexual contact. If you are already infected with a strain of herpes, you cannot get reinfected with the same strain.

However, this assumes you have been tested and know for sure which strains you have.

Not sure? Then I'd advise you adopt the habit of using flavored condoms during fellatio, lest you do wind up with genital herpes.

Be very careful with oral sex. I am in my early 20's, not had intercourse but have had oral. once my bf had a cold sore and i did not realise that it was the herpes virus.we had oral as usual and then I thought I developed very mild herpes. According to tests however i have not but at the same time i was given any other explanation either, which does not put my mind completely at rest especially as herpes diagnosis can be confused with other conditions such as thrush. Either way I knew I was fine, not in any pain, healthy but i can not stop thinking about the potential risk to other partners? I would not wish this anxiety on anyone.

If she is prone to cold sores I would be very careful as even a condom will not completely protect you. Furthermore if you do become worried because you develop symptoms, as blood tests are not all that accurate, you are left waiting for months at a time for anything that could be a symptom so that a test can be performed on adequate amounts of the potential virus.

yes it can happen specially if there is a visable cold sore or genital outbreak. it certainly does not mean that u wil never get them because u have a good chance of getting them. if she goes down on your genitals it can transfer into genital herpes but again only when a cold sore is there. use condoms if u plan on having oral sex that will cut the risk down some.
