On tv an commercial about cholesterol claims that by using their pill at least one indivdual lowered his choleterol by 18%---- a drop of thirty points. What was his original cholesterol level?

Lighten up, folks, it's a math question.

If 30 points represents 18% of the original, then you divide 30 by 0.18, with a result of 166.67 as the original cholesterol level.

30 = 0.18x
30/0.18 = x
166.667 = x

Rule of thumb check: 18% is approximately one fifth. 30 is one fifth of 150, so this roughly agrees with our answer.

the point being that the medication effected a drop, what the levels are or were, are no one's business but his.
Still, if you are interested in cardiac health, a good book to read is " NO More Heart Disease" by Dr. Louis Ignarro, he was awarded a Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work in this area, and you or anyone can benefit greatly from what this man has learned and shared with us...I know I did.
