Ok so after I saw this peta thing called "meet your meat" plus finding out Frank Iero encourages vegetarianism, I've decided to become a vegetarian, and I'm serious about it.

But I have one question:

My english teacher likes to bake us cookies, and they are amazing!
I was wondering, since part of vegetarianism is not eating eggs, can I still have her cookies [she uses eggs in them]?

Thanks!

Well first off not eating eggs is vegan. Also don't become too wrapped up in the whole PETA movement. I was at one point and i ended up actually finding out that they have killed more then 10,000 animals from 1998 - 2003. Ingrid Newkirk the president of PETA has confessed and been quoted saying that she would kill up to a dozen cats a day in the morning when she worked at an animal shelter and PETA members have been caught red handed throwing hundreds of dog carcasses into dumpsters. I mean don't get me wrong i'm vegetarian also and it's a very smart move but PETA are hypocrites so i wouldn't get very wrapped up in what they're doing.

Hello,
Some vegetarians do eat eggs. They are called as "Lacto-ovo-vegetarians" or something, i am not sure of that.

Other vegetarians do not eat eggs, meat, etc. but take dairy products. Vegans are the ones who do not eat eggs/milk/or any other animal product.

Since you want to become a vegetarian, you can eat eggs. Just find out the name that i wrote above (incorrectly), and you can mention your self by that.

There is no need to tell your teacher to use substitute. Or if you still do not want to eat eggs, then simply do not eat the cookies and tell your teacher that you have stopped eating animal products. She will understand. Don't worry.

Best wishes

I have an angst when it comes to school officials bringing in junk food to school and giving it to our children. Now my main one is the candy bars and processed baked goods (cookies made from a grocery store for instance) to give to kids for their good works. I had to teach my kids a polite way of saying no thank you, or ask for a sticker!

Now home baked cookies would not be so bad. Especially if it makes the teacher happy to see the students enjoying the food that was made from the teacher's hands. And you could always ask the teacher to accept your challenge of making the cookies vegetarian style. There are many cookies that do not call for eggs! Or try the Egg Replacer as a substitute? Or even use Flaxseeds (Omegas for the Brain) that have been sitting in boiling water for 15 minutes and then whirled in the food processor till a gelatinous mess ensues as an egg substitute also. Maybe the teacher would love to make them for you and consider it an extension of cookie knowledge.

Otherwise you will have to make the decision of your taste buds and the ingestion of eggs, to your making a decision to not be dependent upon animals for your nourishment. This will not be the last time you will have to face this dilemma in your life with this decision that you have courageously taken on.

I might also suggest that you eat the cookies, to have a nice memory of the teacher and the class, because the class only last a couple of months anyways and eggs are just animal by-products (no killing of animals, just an abuse of animals). When the class is over, then you can abstain from eggs and be a strict vegetarian! Life is full of gray areas! Maybe this is just one of those times.

Congrats on going veg! I also became vegetarian after seeing the Meet Your Meat video.

You can eat eggs if you're vegetarian (but not vegan). The egg industry is extremely abusive, though... see http://goveg.com/factoryFarming_chickens_egg.asp .

Also, I wouldn't take the anti-PETA site (above) very seriously... the site was created by Rick Berman, a lobbyist for the meat, alcohol, and tobacco industries. Meat companies are afraid that PETA's good work to protect animals will affect them financially... so they donate tons of money to the lobbyist, who then does smear campaigns against PETA and many other animal rights organizations. See http://consumerdeception.com/ for more info.

Good luck!

Slow down and take you time with it. Start with lacto ovo vegetarian for now and when you are used to and meat products repulse you (that WILL happen), then switch to vegan. Vegans don't eat eggs, dairy, or honey.
Eat the cookies and enjoy for now.
Oh and if you're dead set on strict vegan, or not, THESE cookies are amazing. Much better than any other cookies I've ever had, and they are vegan.

If you are a vegetarian, you can eat cookies. If you are a vegan, yes again. There are good egg and butter substitutes you can use, the quality won't be as good as if you used the real thing, they will be harder. How far are you going with it? Vegans eat not a hell of a lot. Vegetarians eat more variety than non, so its up to how far you are going to take it.

um.. most people who call themselves "vegetarian" are "lacto-ovo vegetarian" meaning they DO eat milk and eggs..

VEGANS don't..

now if you have a problem with eggs, that's one thing.. but leaving eggs alone is NOT a "requirement" of vegetarianism.

COmmercial eggs are unfertilized as well, meaning they could not, under any circumstanses, turn into a baby chicken..

So.. thats a bit more informaton on being vegetarians and eating eggs.. Now you can make a more informed decision.

I think vegetarians generally do eat eggs. My understanding is that it is vegans who do not eat eggs or dairy products.

I would suggest you should decide for yourself whether you want to stop eating/using all animal products or continuing to eat/use some animal based products. You don't have to do something just because everyone else does. Decide for yourself what is right and wrong.

Hope you find some nice foods whatever you decide.

Little mix-up here, red llama. VEGANISM is where you don't eat any animal products. VEGETARIANISM is where you can eat dairy and eggs, but not meat and fish. So, if you want, you CAN eat eggs! Hope the cookies are nice!

you should be a lacto-ovo vegetarian (almost all vegetarians are) where you can still eat eggs and dairy, just no meat. That's what i am, and its great because you are still saving the animals, but you get to eat cookies and cake aswell:)
