Many Christmas customs that take place in the United States have been adopted from those in the United Kingdom, although customs from Germany, also one of the major ethnic groups, are also reflected in common customs.[4] As such, the mainstays of the English table are much the same in the United States; cranberry sauce, turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, and green beans are all very common. Corn is also a holiday favorite, used during Thanksgiving also to celebrate the Pilgrims' landing at Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. Alternately, ham is often served instead of, or along with, the turkey. Stuffing might include chestnuts, oysters, fruit, or the basic herbed bread. Dessert often reflects the ethnic background of the participants, but often includes pumpkin pie, fruitcake, or mince pie. Regional meals vary from one to another, Hawaii has Turkey teriyaki, Virginia has oysters and ham pie, the Upper Midwest includes dishes from the predominately Scandinavian backgrounds such as lutefisk and mashed rutabaga or turnip, and so on.[5] In the Southwest especially New Mexico, a traditional Christmas dinner might include posole, tamales, empanaditas (mincemeat turnovers) and biscochitos. Another tradition with holiday meals in the United States is grace.

Like mentioned before a lot of Americans have the same dinner as thanksgiving but sometimes there are Cornish hens, ducks, stuffing always, cranberry sauce, stuffed mushrooms, sweet potato pies, cream pies, rolls, macaroni and cheese, corn bread, greens, carrots, green beans, and corn basically and sometimes pork products. The tradition may have started because of how pigs were the easiest to breed and make a little less wild than wild boars and it was just used as something nice to eat for the holidays. And for the holiday after it is usually take out Chinese food.

Usually My family will have some nice Honey Ham, usual sides are Brussels Sprouts, Sauteed leeks, Sweet as well as regular potatoes in some form such as mashed or seasoned home fry style baked ones. Also usually have green beans or mixed vegetables even corn is good. My mom usually makes some Bread or rolls, sometime a small salad. Its not a bad meal I got plenty of ideas for dishes based on what my mom, as well as my sister have made for X-mas dinner.

A lot of families do a re-play of the Thanksgiving turkey dinner. (which i don't really get, we just did that!)
And a lot of people have a ham. (Maybe a Christian tradition?) Ham, green beans, a big salad, dinner rolls, several different mustards...)

This is what we have every Christmas in my family. :-) Its our own tradition.

Turkey & dressing, a spiral ham, fried and baked chicken, macaroni & cheese, collard greens, cabbage, turnips, candied yams, rice & giblet gravy, chitlins, deviled eggs, cubed steak over rice, and cornbread. We always have sweet tea to drink. My Grandma makes it along with her pound cakes and sweet potato pies made from scratch.

It varies by family I think.

My grandfather makes a rib roast, with potatoes, carrots, green beans, and a few other veggies. For dessert, it's usually mince pie, lemon meringue pie, fruit cake and christmas cookies.

My aunt, on the other hand, makes an Italian feast with lasagna, spaghetti puttanesca, frutti de mare, chicken marsala, Italian wedding soup, salad, brasciole, meatballs, sausage, garlic bread, sauted spinach, and some other veggies. Dessert at her home is a feast in itself; Black Forest cake, rum cake, coconut cream cake, fruit cake, pannetone, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, brownie pie, linzer torte, cream puffs, honey balls, brownies, cookies, fudge, and homemade chocolate truffles.

As long as you have your family with you, it makes no difference what you eat on Christmas day.

There are many healthy fruits and vegetables. Fruit and vegetables like broccoli and green spinach contain calcium and are packed with fiber.
