Today we found out that my little sister has a heart murmur. She has been athletic her entire life and is going to state in track next year as a freshman. I was just wondering if she will still be able to participate in track and cheerleading. If anyone has any input about this I would love to hear from you. Thanks a lot...

Today we found out that my little sister has a quiet heart murmur. She has been athletic her entire life and is going to state in track next year as a freshman. I was just wondering if she will still be able to participate in track and cheerleading. If anyone has any input about this I would love to hear from you. Thanks a lot...

Yes she can participate but like the doc says you need to get an eval of her heart to see what degree her murmur is. My is 2/6 which is rather non threatening. I played soccer , basketball and tennis my entire life no problems on the court or field ever. Just rule out any other possiblities. Worse case scenrio if she does have an arrythmia irregular heart beat she may have to wear a halter monitor over night worse case.Good luck let us know how things go.

A heart murmur is a sound that can be detected with a Doctor's stethoscope. Many are benign and some even go away from time to time. This type is fairly common and should be no reason for alarm. Others may warrant a re-check periodically. It is simply a sound that cannot be explained even with chest x-ray or EKG as these can all be normal. Just keep a watch on it, and hope it goes away.
