I don't eat meat, fish and eggs, and would be interested to know of any Chinese and Japanese dishes that I can order in a restaurant. If you feel like typing out only your fave items, even that will help!

Most Japanese restaurants have vegetable sushi. Udon and miso soup are another option. They might also have tempura fried veggies, but make sure you ask if they use any dairy products in their tempura batter (if you're opting for a vegan meal). Most Chinese restaurants have a tofu dish of some sort.

Have you looked up happycow.net before? How about friendsofanimals.org? They have a list of veg and veg-friendly restaurants, and there might be some in your area. I find that over half of the veggie restaurants serve Chinese or Vietnamese food.

If you know what restaurant you're going to ahead of time, then it's a good idea to check out their website or call to inquire of their vegetarian options.

Best wishes :)

Japanese:

My favourite is Age Dofu which is a block of silken tofu fried on the outside, in a clear broth, that, from memory, I think is a little sweet - the texture of the silken tofu is so nice and a lot of my non-vege friends also order it as an appetizer now after trying mine.

Vegetarian sushi - such as tofu sushi or avacado sushi, or marinated mushroom sushi or combination vege sushi

also vegetable tempura (pretty fatty though).

Chinese:

If you are ever lucky enough to go to a vegetarian Chinese restaurant you will see the most spectacular vegetarian food ever "vegetarian fish" - which is some vegetable foods made to look like a fish - the skin tasted a bit like chicken skin baked (I think they often use a seitan or gluten in some vegetarian food) - I had that in Shanghai along with some lovely vegetable dishes.

There are some great vegetarian buffets in Hong Kong which are quite cheap at lunch (around $12 AU) for a buffet and you know that everything on the table is vegetarian - pretty amazing.

apart from the vegetarian restaurants you may have to be pretty explicit in what you order as chinese often add chicken stock to their dishes (even vegetable dishes) - so say no chicken stock.

Some Chinese restaurants will have tofu so you can get mixed tofu and vegetables or cashews and vegetables, vegetarian spring rolls.

I had sesame tofu in a chinese restaurant the other night - it was a large piece of tofu with a sesame paste over the top served with lovely thinly sliced vegetable garnishes.

Most Chinese places have vegetable stir-fry options, but do ask to make sure they don't use chicken broth or fish sauce. If you get a noodle dish, make sure the noodles don't have eggs. Tempura also often is made with egg. At a Japanese restaurant, you can probably get maki veggie rolls--seaweed, rice, and a vegetable.

I agree you should go to www.happycow.net or www. vegdining.com, as they will lead you to places where you can get a veg*an meal..

Be careful about any soups...not sure how asian soup recipes generally work...but most soups have chicken broth in them.
Fried tofu! delicious!!! There are a lot of stir-frys out there that don't have any meat in them...or wont if you ask them no leave it out :) Same is true for chow-mein. My favorite is vegetable fried rice...soooo good...it often has eggs in it though, so just ask them to leave it out. Since most of these restaurants have tofu on hand then can be VERY veggie friendly....pick a meat dish, like cashew chicken, and ask them to use tofu instead...that will let you have all sorts of veggie and sauce combinations. Works for me! Also...veggie sushi...and spring rolls...I just googled them and it looks like most of them are made out of rice flower, water and salt...so as long as the filling is meat-free you are good to go.
