Im a vegitarian, but I want to get a snake. The only problem is that I would have to feed it mice. If I got the snake, would I be going against all that I believe in. Do you think its ok for me to get a snake, even tho I have to feed it live mice.
Should I get it or not?

The only reason I am going to feed it live mice, is because im getting a ball python, and the petstore I would get it at only feeds the snakes live mice. If you know anything about ball pythons, then you know it is very difficult to change their diets from live mice to dead ones.

You can get it if you have to and it really doesn't go against your beliefs because you're not the one eating it and other animals have to survive off of it as long as you don't watch it happening and you can give it whole uncooked eggs as well so you don't have to use too many rodents. And there are also speciatly stores where the animals are unconcious and in the freezer but eventually aren't breathing anymore and are usually called pinkies they might have them at the pet food store as well. But if they only mainly eat rodents then if you aren't squeamish or any thing then you can just leave it alone for a while though and be very careful with it. Or you could try getting a different kind of snake.

There are snakes that you can get that eat insects instead of mice.
There are as many different varieties of diets for snakes as there are types of snakes themselves. Some eat worms, insects and toads while others feed on birds and small mammals. Some examples of snakes that feed on rodents are pythons, the king, rat and gopher snakes. A captive snake must be offered the right type of food to give it the proper kind of security to feed. If the snake feels insecure, he will not eat, even if he is very hungry. Do not handle the snake after it eats. You must wait until it has digested its meal otherwise it may regurgitate the meal and refuse to eat for several days following.
For brown snakes or garter snakes, earthworms are a good choice of food item. Worms are easy to collect after dark on a dewy or rainy night or can be purchased at a bait store. Many snakes eat fish, fresh or frozen, which can also be purchased. Frozen fish should only be used when fresh fish is not available. There has been much evidence suggesting that a natural diet is the best for a snake in captivity. Snakes need to eat at regular intervals. Ones that are smaller than three feet should be fed prey the size of a mouse once or twice a week. Larger snakes take larger prey at less frequent intervals. Force feeding a snake should be a last resort. They will swallow a food item if it is placed far back in its mouth.

There aren't any vegetarian snakes.
I wouldn't recommend keeping one, I think it's better if they live in their natural habitat.
I used to keep pet turtles, snakes, toads, lizards and so on as pets when I was a child and teenager. Now I'm kind of ashamed that I did that because I don't think it was in their best interest. I loved them, but it was a selfish kind of love.
I still keep a turtle or snake temporarily if I find one that I think is going to get run over by a car or something, but I always turn them loose in an appropriate area as soon as possible (within a few days, usually).

Yes!!! get it!!! they make GREAT pets. Just cuz ur a vegetarian, doesnt mean the snake is. At first, u feed them pinkies (frozen dead mice) so u oughta be able 2 get used to the idea. after that, you will, depending on the snake have to start feeding it live mice. dont worry, you dont have to watch, just put the snake in a cardboard box and toss the mouse/rat in there. the reason you put it in a box is so that the snake wont get used to the idea of food in it's cage so that it wont snap at you. Good luck and have fun!!!

i have a snake, but i'm not a vegetarian. we dont feed my snake live mice because that can cause them to bite at any given time because they will get use to attacking movement and well, your hand moves. we feed him frozen mice that you have to thaw for about 20 minutes prior to feeding. They are (obviously) dead when you buy them so technically YOU wouldnt be killing anything or contributing to the process at all. i wouldnt have the heart to let my snake eat a live mouse. if this is what you would like to do then you can email me at kt_hearts_ya@yahoo.com if you have questions about what they're called or prices, etc.

It on you to choose but i would say yeah. I wouldn't be against what you believe because snakes have to eat mice. YOU make the choice to not eat meat but snakes don't have that option. And plus its not like you would have to watch them eat. When you drop the snake in it takes a while for it to eat it. Good luck.

i had a snake and though i was not a vegetarian... i did feed it mice and rats.. you can get them humanley from local reptile stores already frozen...they just pop them in the freezer alive and they go to sleep and die quite natuarally. No pain. Though if you do get a snake..Please make sure that he hasnt been fed on live food as if you try and convert him or her to frozen you will have trouble feeding him.Mine eventually starved to death as he couldnt convert to dead defrosted bait.(we stopped breeding mice as we were both allergic) and pet stores wont sell you them live if they know what you want it for. Also remember that life is all about a food chain.Whilst we dont need meat to keep us alive(its our personal choice).Snakes do. Think long and hard about it before you go ahead. They can live for a long time. 20 to 25 yrs.You could breed them privately(mice) but i assume this would not be your preference to dangle a live mouse at a snakes mouth.Whatever you decide..Good Luck!!

All snakes are carnivorous, so you'll have to feed it some sort of creature no matter what kind you get though smaller ones, like garter snakes, do eat insects.

It depends on how you look at it:
You don't want animals to be consumed, and that is correct.
But:
It's a food chain, snakes depend on mice, and I'm sure you want a snake to eat what it needs to be healthy, so look at it both ways and decide.
I suggest you dont get a snake.

You're the only one who can answer "all that (you) believe in". Some vegetarians (PETA members, for example) believe that no one should have a pet of any kind - period. If you have a pet, you can't alter its diet, if they are carniverous, they have to remain carnivorous. If you want a vegetarian animal, get a fruit bat or a bearded dragon or something like that. Snakes are not vegetarians
