I am 23 and my doctor had me have an EKG done yesterday. He mentioned that my blood pressure was high and then put in an order to go and have one done. What are the reason to have this preformed and what are they looking for?

An ECG is a test that studies the electrical activity that occurs in the heart. ECG's can show the doctor how your heart is functioning and if there are any significant problems with conduction that have a possibility of causing more serious disturbances, such as the risk of having a fatal arrhythmia. Hypertension can increase the size of the heart and may cause damage to the muscle of the heart. The ECG will show if it is causing any problems.

They look for an abnormal heart rate, rhythm.
At 23 there really is no reason to send you for an EKG unless the doctor suspects something serious (not trying to worry you, just being honest).
You need to question your doctor this question and not a group of complete strangers on the computer.

an EKG measures the electrical impulses of the heart and how well they are being transmitted thru the tissues of the heart. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, can inhibit the transmission thru damaging the tissues...your doctor is likely getting a baseline reading to compare future EKGs against, in the course of your treatment for hypertension.
