Most of the time one or a few hiccups happen because the diaphragm muscle is irritated, often by something as simple as a very cold, very fast, or very big drink. Eating too fast or too much, eating hot and spicy foods or liquids, drinking carbonated or alcoholic beverages, sudden excitement, or a sudden change in temperature may trigger hiccups. Sometimes the hiccups don't stop and they last for hours. In these cases it is necessary to look for the cause and there are many possibilities. The most common causes are related to problems with a nerve or a chemical imbalance in the blood. These problems may over-stimulate the diaphragm. This causes the diaphragm muscle to contract too often and too vigorously. Examples of the wide variety of things that can cause prolonged hiccups are: a foreign body in the ear touching the eardrum, kidney failure, pneumonia, and abdominal surgery. The treatment depends on the cause. If there is a specific cause, such as a kidney problem or pneumonia, treating the medical problem may cure the hiccups. Sometimes gently pulling on the tongue will stop the hiccups. This affects the nerves that control the diaphragm. Medicines, such as seizure medicines or sedative, are also sometimes used to try to give relief. If you tend to have hiccups often, try to avoid the things that may cause them, such as overeating, eating or drinking too fast, or drinking alcohol. You may be able to figure out what causes your hiccups and avoid that activity. If you are unable to prevent the hiccups, pulling on your tongue really is an effective way of stopping them.

No, I doubt it's caused by the death of your friend. They don't know too much about what causes hiccups, but the most popular answer is that it's from swallowing too much air. Perhaps chew your food more? Don't drink so many carbonated drinks. Just try not to swallow air. :P Holding your breath works really well, and oddly enough I've found that grapefruit juice can make them stop too. It's as if the sour taste of it shocks your mouth into remission. haha

Take a glass of water that is half full, put in a teaspoon of sugar. Still five times clockwise and five times counterclockwise. Drink with your head upside down. This usually works! I think your so distracted by the time you get through the process, you forget to hiccup!

actually hiccups are generally caused by a cranial nerve being irritated the nerve then in turn causes the diaphram to spasm, it is either the phrenic nerve or vagus nerve, for the phrenic try shaking your thoracic cavity chest vigoriously never do this to small children, the thing that works the best with me is to push rather firmly right above my eyebrows on the inner part do it for like 30 to 60 seconds your hiccups should be gone. good luck.

Hold your breath. Drink a glass of water quickly. Become frightened. Use smelling salts. Pull hard on your tongue. Place one-half teaspoon of dry sugar on the back of your tongue. (You can repeat this process 3 times at 2-minute intervals. Use corn syrup, not sugar, in young children.)
