What is it that happened to people exactly? I know that kids with type 1 usually died very young and that those who got it later in their lives were put on an extremely strict diet and more or less starved to death, which prolonged their lives by up to a few months.

Is the latter valid for type 1 only or does it refer to type 2 as well? I mean, some people with type 2 can change their diet and exercise and their condition would better, isn't that so?

And then again how did doctors try to cope with it?

Does anybody know where I can find some extensive resources online? (no wiki tho) :)

Go to Pubmed (link below), search on diabetes, go to the last page, and work your way backwards. There are free full text links to scientific articles going back to the early 1900's (prior to insulin use).

use the yahoo search engine to start....I typed in history of diabetes treatment and got over 2 thousand hits...lots of information out there about this.
do the same in google and get four times the hits.....just use any available search engine.
