The first young lady is right it is a Caribbean variety of the Yam family, I am a former chef and work in Jamaica and it is used for both savoury and sweet dishes.

In savoury it used like a regular potato, in stews, a traditional "Rundown" which is a fish stew made with coconut mlik and other root veg, they are boiled and served like white potatos in the US and Canada also.

In sweet things like Sweet Potato pone a pudding like cake made with them molasses and spices, mash into a pudding with cassava, like tapioca but thicker and denser, fried and sprinkled with sugar and cinnimon, grated and used in Jamaican Christmas cake and a fritter with mashed bananas.

They resemble a north american yam/sweet potato in shape, but the skin is more reddish then orange and the flesh is white and sticky.

Yeah, I went to Jamaica and they had this food they called "yams" and it was kind of like a potato but it had kind of a "waxy" texture. I liked it.
