I am a new vegetarian and I have a 7 month old baby! Now is the time that I need to start thinking about introducing proteins into her diet. I don't know where to begin. I mean, I know beans are the best source for her, but how do I prepare them to make them easy for her to eat? What are other great sources of protein for her? She eats just about anything I feed her. Can someone please help me?

There are plenty of people that raise their children as vegetarians. It is quite healthy to raise a child as a vegetarian. You may want to check out http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/ It has useful info and people that may be able to help.

You need to do a lot of research to be sure you are feeding your baby the right foods. I would check with a doctor, but also be aware that many of them do not know about vegetarian nutrition.

Some really great books to read, and get a little advice would be:

You could try cooking the beans and then mashing them... I guess that would be the easiest way to feed them to her.. You don't want to add too much to them since she maybe allergic to an additive.. Or try a homemade "hummus" that's just ground chickpeas with olive oil... That's the only protein besides soy protein.. Although, that would be a good choice as well.... I would consult a doctor BEFORE starting your baby on a purely vegan diet.. As lack of whole proteins- can retard growth. I would be very careful in giving a baby/toddler an all vegan diet...

Good luck

Not soya, there is too much growing data to suggest that soya protein may interfear with the hormonal system of growing babies. I would suggest that you look out for veg*n baby food at your local supermarket and see if that gives you any ideas.

Also the only best advice anyone can give on here is go and see your doctor about it, noone in the V&V section is really a qualified doctor or is there optain an unbiased one.

American's consume way too much soy that can cause early puberty in children. Adults can consume tofu once a day and be fine but if you can avoid giving it to your baby I would. At 6 months your baby should only be eating fruits and veggies and formula or Breast milk. At nine months you can introduce yogurt and meat. Hope that helps. Ask your doctor what is right for your baby.

Strongly recommended for soy. You may not require excessive protein into his/her meal. Mix with other protein varieties like nuts, etc for variety.

Learn varieties of cooking. For the beginning you may go for mock-me*t, learn the preparation and serving in many ways.

Prodigy 5 is giving you great advice. Another book I used(30+ ) years ago with my children is Feed Me I'm Yours. I'm sorry I do not know if it still around.
If the wee one is nursing or on formula she is getting all the "protein" she needs. Start on fruit, rice, sweet potatoes, things like that.

the old school of thought was beans & rice together were a complete protein, but you really need to do you homework (pediatricians are not dietitians)so you need get the baby off on the right track. btw...not all children in the world are given meat (or cows milk), so if your desire is to be vegetarian then go for it, but be educated.

We aren't vegetarians, but I'd marinate tofu in Tamari sauce, then slice it very thin and cook it in a little olive oil in a cast iron skillet. Then I'd mash it up when it was cool and feed it to him. To this day he loves tofu. Mashed up kidney beans were a big hit too!
