About a week ago, I went in to urgent care because I thought I might have had a bladder infection (which I did), and to check up on a sore that had appeared in my genital region a couple of days prior to going in.
They swabbed the sore and just called me back saying I have herpes.
What I am confused about is the fact that I have only had sex with one person in my entire life. We've been dating for about 2.5 years, and were both virgins. I KNOW that he has never cheated on me, and I have never cheated on him.
So, if we have been in a monogomous relationship, how could I have gotten herpes?
The doctor (or nurse?) who talked to me said it was a possibility that I could have gotten it from a toilet seat... But from what I have read, that is VERY unlikely.
The only other thing that would make sense is if either of us had cold sores ever, but I don't think I have.
Is it possible I was misdiagnosed?

if the Dr told you you got herpes from looking at then you probably do. does your bf get cold sores? if he does he might have giving you genital herpes. it is possible, and very likely to happen. or maybe your bf was not a virgin like he said or maybe he cheated, because if you've only been with one person then you only have a suspect.
herpes is usually not misdiagnosed, not a lot of things give you sores on the genitals. I don't think the herpes virus can survive outside the body for long, so you getting it from the toilet seat, that is just absurd. I can believe the Dr told you that.
don't be scared, life goes on and so will you. just take care of your self and keep being a good girl, and educated yourself on things you can do to avoid passing it on.
good luck

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

Actually, if you DON'T have cold sores that would make you much more likely to get genital herpes from receiving oral sex from your boyfriend if he is a carrier of hsv-1 - i.e. if he DOES have the cold sore virus.
8 out of 10 people have hsv-1 on their mouths. Nine out of ten of them have NO symptoms and do not realise that they have it. It is usually caught from being kissed by a family member or another child when you are very small.
It is easy to catch herpes oral-to-genital way within a monogamous relationship with a partner who does not actually have genital herpes, only oral.
This happened to my sister with her boyfriend - he never remembered having cold sores, but when he was tested when she developed genital herpes he was positive for hsv-1, which normally indicates a case of oral herpes not genital.
It also happened to me, although my boyfriend had a history of cold sores. He did not have one at the time though - you don't need to have symptoms to pass it on.
You only tend to get hsv-1 (the oral herpes virus) genitally if you are one of the minority who have never caught it orally. It is extremely easy to get it genitally if you practice oral sex and you don't have it orally - both me and my sister got it genitally - our parents didn't have cold sores and we didn't catch them as kids.
If you haven't ever had cold sores, it is likely that this is why you have got it - because you don't have the protection agianst his oral infection that you would have if you also had it orally. He could have oral herpes and never have had symptoms - he could have caught it as a child like most people do.
You are right about the toilet seat, not the doctor. The herpes virus only survives a few seconds outside the body. and there has never been any evidence or proof that it can be passed on an inanimate object. That is why they say it is a virus passed by skin to skin contact.
It is unlikely you were misdiagnosed. When they test from an outbreak, they take a swab and this is the most reliable method there is of testing for herpes.

if it was a +ive swab test then the chances are that it is correct - like 99% correct.
If you BF has oral herpes (some people have it and just do show the signs) then that is where is most likely came from. HSVI and II can be tested via a blood test - either an IgG or western blot type specific but it will tell you if you have it but not the exact place on your body. You most likely DID NOT get it from a toilet seat. check out the group "picking up the pieces" here on yahoo and the westerover heights clinic's herpes handbook.

My best friend has had genital herpes for about eight months now, and it's been really rough. She's had about 7 outbreaks. Everywhere I read it says it stops flaring up so much after time, but its not getting less frequent for her. She's been on Antiviral meds the whole time, too. She also has type 1 diabetes which she has had her whole life, which really weakens her immune system. Will it ever get better?
But after a friend share this video everything has changed.

if the test said yes, then you have it. either of you could have it, without even knowing that you had it. so don't go blaming him. you might have already had it.
here is the thing, cold sores are herpes type 1. moms and dads who have type 1 kiss their babies and give it to them. most people get it before the age of 2. so you could go blaming this on either of your parents. LOL.
how it got from your mouth to down there, oral sex would be my guess. it is spread by skin to skin contact, not a toilet seat.

first of all there is a very rare chance that u could have gotten herpes from a toilet seat. usually it takes skin or sexual contact to contract herpes. u could have been born with herpes or he could have herpes and not even know it. if its possible get a second opinion if the sore comes back, get a swab test done. i think it would be unlikely that u were missdiagnossed since hospitals are usually professional about test results. but if u feel that u were, get a second opinion if the sore comes back get a swab test done.

slim chance of misdiagnosis, if they cultured the wound and it grew out herpes, then that is pretty much written in stone.
If either of you had chicken pox as children, then you carry the virus in your nervous system and it doesn't take an active lesion to transmit that virus. It is uncommon to develop genital herpes in such a manner, but not unknown. Talk to your doctor about taking Valtrex once a day to control your symptoms, and use a condom from now on.
