I am a vegan and hence I avoid all animal products such as milk and eggs. The problem is that there are so many products out in the market which use them in the recipes. I have recently found that frenchfries contain milk in their preparation much to my dismay. Even Jell-O, marshmallows and many more such foods contain gelatin which is extracted from animals.

I would like to know a list of all such (most common) food items which use animal products so that I can avoid them. I have tried a few websites such as goveg.com, peta.org, etc but I could not find a comprehensively compiled list anywhere.

Vegans, help me out. Thanks

There's not really a definitive list, as companies frequently change their forumlations. You could buy from vegan retailers, such as Pangea (www.veganstore.com), Vegan Essentials (www.veganessentials.com), Different Daisy, or Cosmo's Vegan Shoppe. Check out www.vegweb.com for recipes and resources.

The E.G. Smith Collective puts out a book called "Animal Ingredients from A to Z" regularly. It's pretty extensive. I tend to worry about the biggies--meat, meat stock, gelatin, dairy and milk ingredients, bee products, carmine, and most food and/or confectioners' glazes--and let the ambiguous stuff go.

The best thing to do is read labels religiously and if something is ambiguous (just what are those "natural flavors"), contact the company. If you have any doubt about an ingredient, put the item back on the shelf.
