I have just learned I have type two diabetes. When I go walking now I can't pig out on breakfast & then go a whole day without eating. What are the best foods to take walking, bearing in mind I am far away from shops & eateries?

I am not sure what Dartmoor is. I looked it up and it may be a place in England.
As far as exercise goes, eat breakfast first and then take some emergency foods with you while you walk.
Make sure your breakfast has protein [Peanut butter, milk, eggs ] some fiber and carbs.
Take fast acting candy- not chocolate - with you.You can also take some fruit juice or a piece of fruit to eat while walking.
You are right to always have emergency food with you.

Once you get over the confusion and get used to it, it won't be very hard at all. Sometimes doctors give very confusing nutrition and diet information, but the best sources are books that have been written by nutritionists, Some of the diabetic sites on the internet (do a Yahoo! search but you have to use your own common sense), and people who have had diabetes for at least five years.

The hardest thing I have had to part with is orange juice (I'm a recovering orange juice and grapefruit juice addict!), so I definitely feel your pain. and you're right, no pigging out!

I have to travel occasionally with a non-profit group, and find myself with no car to get to any healthy foods, and only a continental breakfast which is loaded with sugar (including orange juice... AAAARRRRGHHH!!!).

The only way I can survive is to pack diabetic milkshakes and meal bars in my suitcase. That helps me a lot until I can get to some real food. And don't forget your blood glucose meter!

Of course everyone is different, and you'll have to find out what works for you. I hope this helps a little...

I like South Beach Diet Protein Bars as they are tasty and filling and easy to carry. Protein bars are generally good as you know precisely what you're getting when you consume them. You can also use meal replacement bars. I know that these aren't the most appetizing things but they will work for you on a long walk/hike and can fit into your diabetic diet.

you should take plenty of carbohydrates with you and have some before you set off as they are long acting and i would also take something like kendal mint cake as this is full of sugar and quick acting if your blood sugar begins to drop. i would also take a blood glucose machine so that you can take your blood glucose readings whilst you are out
