The info on this site made me decide to go vegetarian.. but I have heard from many people that peta.com is actually taking part in some form of animal cruelty. Anyone know anything about this?

Animal cruelty?

No.

PeTA euthanizes thousands of animals each year, so what.
So does EVERY single SPCA, Humane Society and animal control agency.

MILLIONS of adoptable animals are put to sleep each year because there are far to many.

No matter how you feel about killing homeless cats and dogs, it doesn't change the fact that the problem is people letting their animals reproduce instead of getting them spayed/neutered. There is no way that millions of animals can be sheltered indefinitely without inflicting mental anguish upon virtually all of them.

PeTA has NEVER in any way reduced the number of animals that went into homes.

PeTA has NEVER in any way increased the total number of animals that would be euthanized in any year, they have just done the most heartbreaking thing that any caring person could be forced to do, end the lives of animals that never should have been brought into an already overpopulated world.

In fact, PeTA does free spay and neuter surgeries so they have actually decreased the number of animals that are killed each year. Anyone that says otherwise is just on a witch hunt and hates all animal rights activists.

I wouldn't say they take part in animal cruelty.. I would say however that they take part in a great deal of deception of the general public..
For instance, on our news there was a great deal of coverage of Michael Vick and right under that ran a banner asking you to send donations to PETA to "help pitbulls everywhere." That's a load of malarky as PETA supports BANNING pit bulls..
http://www.peta.org/about/hottopic007.asp
I don't think people would have donated if they would've known that.. I personally believe that to be pretty misleading..
Most people weren't so much upset about Peta euthanizing animals as they were about them lying to get them.. Stating that they were going to put them up for adoption only to euthanize them in the back of a van minutes later.. Some of them were even at a Vet's office. The veterinarian said he would've found them homes himself but thought Peta would do a better job. Even our local shelter here tells people whether or not something really has a chance of adoption. If they're full, they tell people and give them the option to keep the pet instead.. Peta also kills a lot more animals per animal they take in then any other shelter within a 2 hour radius..

It just seems like they could do a much better job if the little local places with significantly less funding even have better numbers.. Heck, I know a rural shelter in Kentucky that takes in more animals then PETA and has a 90% save rate..
I wouldn't call it animal cruelty though.. I'd just call it deception of the general public..

There is no law that states you have to support PETA if you are a vegetarian. Many vegans/vegetarians are also put off by PETA's tactics and antics so don't feel too guilty about it. . It was quite foolhardy to make such a drastic change based on website and other people's opinions. However, since you've already made that decision, then it's all up to you to judge whether you've made a mistake or not. Whatever is said here, keep in mind that we are not going to bear the consequences of your actions, you are. It's all up to you to decide and don't let any armchair psychiatrists and omni/veggie fanatics do your thinking for you.

There are reports that some volunteers working for PETA have put animals down because they couldn't house them.

Very few organisations are perfect, i don't know if the above is true.

I don't support PETA, i prefer more level-headed groups like the IVU or the Vegetarian Society.

These focus on positive education, rather than negative scare mongering and shock

PETA seems to sensationalise stuff that doesn't need exagurating - the issues are bad enough without them having to add thier emotive words to it.

Yes.

Almost all animal shelters euthanize thousands of animals ever year because no one wants them and people are too STUPID to get their animals fixed or STOP BREEDING THEM for money.

But when PETA does this, it is deemed hypocritical because PETA is the most outspoken advocate of animal rights.

I'll bet that anyone who tries to sell you this bull about how many animals PETA euthanizes has sure as hell never donated to them or adopted an animal from them.

PETA euthanizes unwanted, healthy animals. That's hypocrisy. Some hypocrites say that it's better than having them live in a cage which is true. But, they should be set free to fend for themselves. Some will die that way but at least they're given a chance.

An over-abundance of animals is no reason to kill them. Set them free and let nature take it's course.

I have issues with PETA for many reasons. And I have heard the accusations of their euthanizing animals. However, there are numerous vegetarian organizations who are far more worthy of your support than PETA. They have excellent information for wannabe veg*ans and don't use the shock tactics PETA does.

No, and I think you'd be pretty hard pressed to find that PETA as an organization is participating in any kind of animal cruelty. There are always certain members of organizations that make mistakes (leaders of the Christian right who have sexual encounters with same sex prostitutes, etc) but never do those people represent the whole.

From what I've seen of PETA they do contradict themselves.
I'm surprised that you haven't heard from more people. Lots of people feel very strongly about this. I think it's wrong to destroy people's research, that just makes them start over, which could hurt more animals. That makes no sense. Also, total animal rights means that you don't tie your dog up or put them in a fenced area, 'cause that would violate their rights. 2/3 of the animals they acquire are put to sleep, yet many PETA followers have protests outside of other shelters that do any euthanasia.

No haven't heard. But I don't think you should make such a big decision based on one website.
