They're found mostly in the south. They're made with corn. I guess you could say they're somewhat similar to cream of wheat or oatmeal in texture and consistency, although not exactly the same.

Grits is a type of corn porridge and a food common in the Southern United States consisting of coarsely ground corn. This is similar to many other thick maize-based porridges from around the world such as polenta. It also has a lesser resemblance to farina, a thinner porridge.
Hominy grits is another term for grits, but explicitly refers to grits made from nixtamalized corn, or hominy.

The correct spelling is grits.
It is a type of corn porridge. It is coarse and grainy. People eat it all over the United States. Not just the south.
People eat it with butter, cheese bacon and other toppings. I hate to be the prude but it’s not that exotic. Go to a grocery store and you can but instant grits. Just add water. Depending on the consistency you like. But this info is on the back of the box.

it is made from corn and it is like a cereal, it take on any flavor you add to it. Most people eat it with eggs, some put cheese in it. It is very fine and some have a little feel to it so hence the name grits. They are sort of gritty, but in a good way.

In Europe it would be "Farine du Mais", alot like the Italian polenta in a way, but in the southern USA, they eat them like a cereal or side starch like mash pototoes or rice.
I am a former chef from Canada, and the "Grits" in the US are ground white corn, alot like semolina, it is cooked in either salted water or mlik, served at breakfast with either milk and sugar or on the side with egg dishes topped with butter, other time in the day it is served as a side dish with butter or gravy.
There are 2 types of cornmeal the white kind and the more common yellow, both taste the same but it is the colour and texture of the US white corn that makes grits so popular. Here in Canada I buy my white cornmeal here in Toronto On in the Portuguese area of town, they make a type of yeast bread with it in it, but the yellow is available in most of the loca grocery store, som eis finer in texture than others and makes a denser dish.
