They don't lie intentionally. This is what my medical books says about bi polar. "Characteristics of the manic phase are excessive emotional displays, excitement, impaired ability to concentrate...often accompanied by delusions of grandeur." So if they are experiencing grandeur, they would lie about certain things, believing they are true.

I am bi-polar and I have to say that this question is not accurate.
Not ALL people with bi-polar lie all the time.
Lying is something that is learned, throughout life. It isn't something caused by "being bi-polar".
While there may be many people in the world that are bi-polar and lie....there are probably just as many people that do not have bi-polar disorder and lie just as often.
Most persons that lie do so because they feel it makes them sound more interesting. Some do it to avoid being in trouble. Some do it simply for the "fun" of it. Its rather sad, but its a part of life too.
Try to avoid those that have been lying to you. You do not need the stress and bs of such actions. Personally, I confront those that wish to lie to me before ending the friendship, but that is merely how I hanle things.
Good luck in trying to figue this out...

It is really terrible that people posted very snarky answers for a person who is looking for answers for a very serious problem associated with a very serious illness. Yes, lying is a characteristic of mania - I have a daughter with bipolar and this is one of her hallmarks. It is not a symptom for everyone, just like people with bipolar might do drugs, or spend all of their money, or be hypersexual. Not everyone exhibits the same symptoms. To the woman who posted her question, there are some good articles that try to explain the phenomenon, but they are not sure why some bipolar people do this. Here is an article: http://www.knowswhy.com/why-do-bipolar-people-lie/
Good luck.

Your question is so judgmental ,ignorant and offensive that it's clear that any problems your poor daughter have probably isn't helped by a mother with attitudes like this.Try looking in the mirror lady

Perhaps it's not bipolar that's the cause of her lying but her upbringing. I do not know one person who lies as a result of bipolar. Nor have I ever seen it listed in any set of symptoms that lying is a characteristic. If you want to have a rant and insult people do it some where else.

why do people with bipolar snore?
okay, i'm sure you're used to that kind of remarks. yes, i'm one of them, and being a smart@ss has nothing to do with the illness.
people with bipolar disorder have labels slapped on their foreheads, and have their character questioned every day.
this is just how it is... people don't laugh at people with Alzheimer's, but they laugh and put down 'bipolar rants'. 'mentally unstable' is not 'mentally weak'. people roll their eyes. people judge you for being a nut.
ask anyone with it. it's not an easy life to this world that's already hard enough.
let's keep in mind, it's biological in nature, just like any other physical illness.
with that said, every unpleasant side they show, you wonder if it's the character or their illness. sometimes, people who have it will use it as an excuse. that's a character issue you need to question. sometimes, they do that, cuz they get too much of a slack by loved ones who feel for them.
you ask anyone in a wheel chair with some pride in themselves. they'll tell you "don't you dare treat me any differently". and one of my close friend who is on a wheel chair parks at spot far away to have space to get in and out of his car, rarely i see him take the spot for handicapped.
no, people with bipolar does not lie all the time. you're the one that's making that excuse for your daughter.
obviously, the meds that she's on isn't doing it for her, and if she doesn't wanna get better, again, that's a character issue.
'bipolar high' is hard to give up. it's addictive. but at the same time, she should know how difficult it is for those around her and want to get better, if it's not for herself.
i don't know how old she is... (okay, you've mentioned she's 25.. i just got that by someone's email) but if i were you, i'd stop making excuses for your daughter's illness/behavior and find her meds that actually work.

No not true - the lying aspect- LOl- never heard that 1 as a symptom!
As for ur daughter - this may be due to being bipolar - her friend status ect. Saying those things to her mite be hurting her feelings since she cant help it.

Not all of them do but this goes along with the mental illness. You will find that the more consistent they are with their medications, the better they feel overall and have no reason then to lie.

because they believe in what they are saying,,,but then again , many , many people lie,,does that mean they are bi polar ?? my husband is bi polar,,, last night in one of his bi polar rants,, he yelled out that he had a girlfriend and she would do things that I do not,,now i know he has no girlfriend,,,but instead of flying into my fit of rage ,,I said that she was lucky because she don't get to deal with all the bulcrap I do,, and if she was around and had to deal with what I do ,,she wouldn't stay long,,, and if what he really wanted was his freedom then he has it,,,rant ended,,,why ,,because i was not going to let his disease feed into another arguement,,, to bad we aren't allowed to rant on here,,cause i have so much built up frustration on this bi polar subject,,,

That question blew me away....
Since when did bipolars get the reputation for lying all the time?
I really don't think it one of the TRAITS of the illness.
Great, so now in addition to the stereotypical image of an out of control spending freak who can also go nympho I have to deal with people questioning whether any word that comes out of my mouth is valid. Oh the STIGMA of it all....
I've met compulsive liars (was even married to one). And NONE of them are bipolars...
So there.... (stuck my tongue out... yes, I did....)
