Thankyou for all your answers.
But I would like just a simple answer....
My mother has been diabetic ( injections) for more than 30 years and basically has the diet side undercontrol.
Now I have convinced her to eat more I feel we have more lee-way being "over" rather than under. As under means passing out.( At 86 and still living alone, not really ideal)
I would like her to be between 7 and 10 so she has more time to take some lucozade before going 'funny'.
What are the short term effects of going too far "over" 15/25 So I can tell her what symptoms to look out for.
Thanks again D.

In terms of the short term it is fair to say your mother would not be putting herself at risk of complications. Infact if she is missing the signs of hypo it would generally be recommended that she ran her bg at a higher level 10 - 12 mmol/l for 2 or 3 months to help her regain her hypo awareness.

OK in simple terns the symptoms of having a high blood sugar level are:

-extreme thirst and dry mouth

-needing to wee more than usual ( can be every 10 minutes or so, sometimes i have dreams that i am looking for a toilet, or having a drink, if this happens during the night)

-feeling sick )but not necessarily being sick)

These symptoms usually happen all at the same time. hope this helps x

I've been a type 1 diabetic for 39 years. I've never gone into a diabetic comma but I've never stopped taking my insulin either. Reacting to light sounds good. Please tell your friend to take his insulin, check his blood sugars and watch his diet. When I was younger, I couldn't check my blood sugars at home, it was urine tests that weren't accurate. Now your friend can live a long healthy life with modern medical technology. Regulating blood sugars are much easier with a glucose meter. Keep BS in check and take care of himself and he'll live a long productive life. Good luck to both of you.

i can understand your frustration........ but if shes doing that well with diet maybe she doesn't need the insulin anymore.... its OK not to take... the problem is when your sugar is getting low your brain can't think of react. that's why ppl slip in to comas. your brain feeds on sugar...... if there is none its starved..... i think if you took her to the doctor and told him or show him her journal with her blood sugars..... she can just take pills maybe....

You really don't get any effects of high glucose until it is really high.

When it goes really high, American 300, you get nasty attitude, easily angered, headache, higher than that lethargy.
