Wow! That's not a lot of info to go on. Some other info might help, such as geographic area, whether the tree is a native or obviously planted, size, leaf arrangement, etc.

You might try one of the websites to help you with the identification:

http://www.arborday.org/trees/treeID.cfm - choose Eastern/Central or Western Identification depending on where you live
http://forestry.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=forestry&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cnr.vt.edu%2Fdendro%2Fdendrology%2F
http://www.enature.com/home/ - enter your zip code, then on the next page choose "trees" from the "results" box

As a suggestion, if the leaf is very "fuzzy", under 2.5 inches and has a whitish underside and almost "maple" shape, google an image of white poplar (Populus alba).

ADDITION: With the info you added, I'd also consider witch hazel (which makes a dry capsule which could look like a nut unless it's popped open).

chew it and see how it tastes. if it tastes sweet it might be aloe vera, if it is sour it could be lime :) TRY IT! or else refer to wikipedia.

disclaimer: if it is poisonous, no responsibilities will be taken.
