I found some articles today that bothered me; they stated that olive oil and other such like vegetable oils are actually unhealthy and lead to higher risks of cancer, all the while touting animal fats as good sources of fat (and avocados, which I can't disagree with; avocados are healthy). To me, it smacks of Atkins, but I don't know. What are your opinions on this?

A few olive oils maybe bad cause they contain some canola oil the most unhealthy oil it's genetic food bad for the thyroid! Other than that the oils are okay.. meat on the other had is bad full of chemicals, there's mad cow disease, salmonella from chickens, mercury poisoning from fish, and then there's all that chlolesteral in meat too.. how is all that healthy? Vegetarianism is healthiest way of eating next to Veganism! I prefer coconut butter, coconut milk, coconut cream, coconut oil!
It really depends on your thyroid level whether saturated fats or unsaturated fats are best for you.
In general unsaturated fats are best. However if you have too low a thyroid level your doctor would tell you to eat more saturated fats! I know as I have low thyroid and it's what my doctor told me to do. He also told me to cut down on Garlic as it lowers the thyroid!

I am not vegan but I do like vegetables and try to eat healthy. I am beginning to question all the edible oil products out there. My doctor had me take fish oil capsules and they gave me intestinal cramps and flatulence. They she had me switch to flax seed oil that made me even sicker. I found out later it's the same as linseed oil and I had to give that product up even for my woodworking as I felt I got allergic to it.

Lately I have been cooking with corn oil but I get nausea about an hour after I eat. I wasn't using very much just a tablespoon or so in my skillet. Someone suggested canola and gave me some to try but it still made me feel sick starting about an hour after I ate. It lasts several hours and is pretty miserable way to spend a day.

My ex loved olive oil and I used to eat food she prepared with that but my memory says I bowed out of that agreement also as I didn't like the taste and it made me feel bad also.

I have been doing all this just to avoid using a little butter. But today I am going to buy some butter and cook with that for a while and see how I feel.

You have to be careful what you read. Most of the information out there today may well just be some company's marketing gimmick to get you to buy their stuff.

For me, I am going to judge by how I feel and not by what others say. We are all different and should listen to our own bodies and feelings. Good luck to us all.

depends on the oil.
Olive oil is fine
Flax seed oil & canola oils were not considered fit for anything but the chemical industry before petrolchemical equivalents started putting the farmers who grew them out of business.
Canola-rapessed oil, was actuall harmful to people until a specific strain was breed in the early 70's which wasn't poisonous.
I've seen similar articles, but I haven't done enough research to be able to talk about it intelligently

vegetable oils in their natural state are healthy. when their processed then there is a question mark.

hydrogenated oil like in margarine is bad for us. trans fatty acids are bad. and rancid or broken down oil is too.

light makes oil brake down. so when a oil is in a plastic container and exposed to light then that could be a problem.

this is a good book on oil "fats that kill fats that heal". it could be the other way round i forgot. " fats that heal fats the kill"

Well, see, studies are always biased and twisted.
They will, for example, do only studies on vegetable oils that are kept in clear plastic containers and determine that because of the poor method of heat extraction and storage and hydrogenation that it's bad for you, and they would be correct. But, unless you know exactly all of the details of the study and watch them do it yourself, you will never know what they hell is going on.

All oils are fats--that's what oils are. The question is, are the oils monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, or saturated. You want the unsaturated fats, which are primarily plant, and avoid saturated, which are mostly animal fats and tropical fats.
