I have also tried adjusting the little knobs inside the front cover, and that did give some improvement, but over time, it has basically diminished back to its dim state.

The TV is a bit too old to pay any money to repair it, but if there is something simple that I can do to tune it up a bit, I'd be a happier man :-)

Everything has been cleaned out and dusted very well... thanks for the input though :-)

Anyone else?

so which is it - do I need to replace a lamp or picture tubes?

I have adjusted the knobs within the front panel of the tv, but all they do is move the colors around, they don't really change the brightness...

If it is a rear projection TV, you need to buy a new lamp.
With a new lamp, it should be like new.

If you PLAYED with it's knobs upfront...and I suspect you mean INSIDE the chassis, then that's ALL you can do to improve the brightness.....

Can't improve it without replacing the picture tubes....

Not worth repairing it....
