'the single greates cause of atheism in the world today is christians. who acknowledge jesus with their lips, then go out the door and deny him by their lifestyles. that is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.'
i would like to apologize for any remark made by any self-proclaimed christians. i am 18 and you have to realize that 4% of my generation will grow up to be god-serving christians.
so not everyone is what or who they claim to be. but you have to realize that christians are humans too, and tend to sin just like everyone else.
not really a question but i keep seeing how atheists complain that christians complain and attack them all the time. just trying to give a mature attitude.

Please understand, there are some atheists on yahoo who are perfectly sane and level-headed. I'm infintely glad to someone speaking as maturely as you. As to your "question," no, I don't think that christianity is the leading cause of atheism. I think the leading cause of atheism is that more and more people are learning to doubt the ideas around them. People are learning to gow and develope their own ideas rather than accept those given to them. Please don't take my comment in the wrong way, I mean what I say in complete respect of your religion.

No! Not at all. The single greatest "cause" of atheism is that people are starting to questions centuries of blind obedience. The bible dictates how old the earth is and so it must be true. When the 'facts' were different from the 'truth' many people just closed their eyes to facts and ignored them. Today, many people are opening their eyes and are asking questions. How could god have created the earth just over 6,000 years ago is we KNOW man has been on earth for over 130,000 years and that the earth has been here more then 35,150 times as long. (4.57 Billion years) We KNOW humanity evolved from older species of Homo Sapiens but the bible says otherwise? We also KNOW that two of every animal would take up more space then was available on the ark... many times the space needed, so that story is FALSE. With the plethora of information available to us today, we see can easily see similarities between what is in the bible and the stories of other cultures and civilizations. What we call mythology today is just debunked religion. After all Heracles the son of Zeus, the Father god and Alcmene a mortal in Greek and Roman mythology (religion). Sound familiar? In Norse mythology, their greatest hero was Thor, son of Odin, the father god and the giantess Jord, which means earth and some speculate was really a human. Hmmm. The Great Flood story appeared in Genesis after the story appeared in the Sumerian stories of Gilgamesh. So it is not any wonder why people are starting to questions the truth of Chrisitanity or any Abrahamic religion... And yet, people are still seeing something. So many prey and hope they are wrong or pray and go to church just in case...maybe...some how, it all true.
I hope this helps.

No, it's not true. Whoever came up with that argument is placing far too much importance on Christianity. Firstly, if Christianity were true then it wouldn't matter how hypocritical some Christians are. Secondly, to reject Christianity is not necessarily to become an atheist.
I'd say the single greatest cause of atheism is the absence of any evidence for any gods.

you see son, Christians can criticize the athiests life style but if you criticize the Christian lifestyle it gets written down as blasphemy. Thats what makes them mad and get back at you. But there is also an underlying circumstance. Some Christians stand in the way of Stem Cell Research, Right of Choice and so on, so naturally, tempers are going to fly.

Christians did not drive me away from Christianity, although their attitude might act as a repellant. My atheism came from years of unanswered questions, finding no answers and logically realizing that there are no answers because the foundation of the religion just is not there. Logically I cannot believe in a god who does nothing to help people in need and who stands by and watches the suffering of people from disease, starvation and crimes and does nothing. No loving god would do that, therefore one does not exist.

Not really true. Christians argue that the universe couldn't have just happened-life couldn't just have happened-there had to be a creator. But bringing in a creator is the same problem in disguise. Who created the creater--and who created the creator of the creator. A house of mirrors. The simplest explanation is that the universe happened all on it;s little own.

I'm an atheist because I don't believe in god(s). There is no proof. I was raised as a Christian, but after reading the Bible cover to cover 4 times, I realized it was absurd.

No. Education is the greatest cause of atheism. There is no evidence that ANY of the thousands of gods exist.
A thorough reading of the Bible, and preachy Christians, are the reason I would NEVER be a Christian, even if God existed. Proselytizing (i.e. trying to destroy others' beliefs) is rude and disrespectful.

Nope, christians can go on believing what ever they want. It is idiotic to believe that you can change someones belief system, they need to initiate the change.
Atheists see that there is no evidence to support the existence of the supernatural or deities. One religion might annoy us over another, but they are all fundamentally the same... exactly the same... superstition, doctrine, reasoning based on theology instead of logic, indoctrination at an early age and blind followers.

I really appreciate your attitude. I do want to let you know that my atheism has nothing to do with believers. I think very highly of many christians. I am an atheist because I do not believe in anything supernatural.
