This happened to me Saturday night! My guy says he feels totally engaged, but I do not. It just does not yet seem complete. I want to tell the world, but is it better just to wait?

Thx to all of you for your advice! Please know I am not materialistic at all; I even asked him to PLEASE not worry about a ring, that getting married to HIM, not to his ring, is more important to me than anything else. We are meeting with our pastor tonight to sort out all the details! Thanks again!

The moment you say yes, you are engaged. Rings should have nothing to do with wanting to spend the rest of your life together.

You sound very materialistic! When a man proposes and you say YES, then you are engaged. Many people don't ever get a diamond ring, just have plain gold bands or ornate diamond-set wedding bands at the marriage ceremony. Probably half the engaged couples tell everyone they're engaged and the ring is being ordered/sized/designed. Some couples decide a down payment on a condo is more important than a diamond ring. If you aren't shouting to the world that you're in love and are going to marry this guy, then there is something very wrong with your priorities and he should maybe give this a second thought.

I had the same thing happen to me - I was just ringless for a while. Yes, I told people but then had to answer all the questions as to why I didn't have a ring yet. Were I to do it over, I would have waited to tell people (other than close family) until I had the ring.

It is more fun to tell people when you have a ring to show - however this is a common situation, and your engagement is based on trust that you are both now committed, and not the ring. You can always wear a cubic zirconia for the time being (you could even pick it out together) . Some people use fake rings in a different metal yellow rather than white gold to have something to match all their jewelry.

I don't have my ring yet either (its been ordered and the jeweler is putting it together) and I've been very selective in telling only a few people about it.
Bide your time planning and plotting.
You can get your guy to be into it by helping come up with a guest list.
Get organized! Start flipping through magazines and thinking what you want.
I'm also planning to do a mailed announcement to friends/family. You can start looking at that, too.
I bought a calligraphy kit so I can do my invitations myself and save us some $$$. I've already started practicing!

Go ahead and shout it to the world.. thats what I felt like doing when I got engaged. If it hadn't been for my mom giving my fiance a family heirloom ring, he wouldn't have been able to afford a ring. But i'm sure he still would have proposed. when you say yes you are engaged, tell everybody. And if they ask about the ring, just tell them its being sized.

If my now wife told me she did not "feel engaged" because she didn't have a damn ring on her finger I would have called her a materialistic whore and called it off right there.

The ring, the dress, the reception, and the honeymoon are not what you are getting married for. If you lose sight of that, then you might as well not get married at all.

It's not the ring that says you are engaged, it is your acceptance that says that. By all means announce your engagement and just be patient! Good things come to those who wait.

Tell People!! You can run around telling everyone you got engaged now, and then run around a month later telling everyone the ring came in!! Think of it as twice the fun and not as being incomplete!

Tell the world. The ring is the symbol of your love, not the actual love. You are engaged, share it with whomever you choose.
