A finger buffet is the easiest to prepare for and probably the cheapest. Sandwiches on different types of breads with different fillings to cater for different needs. Quiches, either bought or homemade. Breadsticks, dips, cherry tomatoes, pickles, crisps, cornchips etc etc. On a table decorated with a Christmas theme, nice napkins etc. Desserts, if you are doing them can be things like mini pavlovas, choux buns, cheesecakes, etc. Most of all, have fun!

I think go with the christmas theme but make it 'retro' - i.e. remember those school christmas parties when you were a kiddie?! triangle sandwiches, crisps, sausage rolls, chocolate logs, jelly and icecream etc! You can also decorate in the same theme very cheaply making paper chains and those lantern thingys. To extend the theme hold some 'school chrismtas competition games' - i.e. best toilet roll (carboard tube) nativity character/snowman etc, best christmas card (you will need to prepare for these - go to early learning and get loads of their really great value glitter, glues and bits to let people get creative!). Alternatively you could provide materials for making 'christmas masks' along the lines of a masque ball, everyone has to make a christmas themed one and wear all night up toa certain point - you can thne think up some games along that.........
Drinks.... you dont say how old you are. If you are over 18 then go for the winter pimms and apple juice combo or mulled wine. If you are under, how about special hot chocolates with marshmallows? Or warmed apple juice with winter spices chucked in?
If you don't like the school party idea I would go for a very nice cheese platter (about 4-5 decent sized different cheeses nicely presented), a ham, breads and crackers, chutneys and grapes - makes a lovely grown up chrismtas tea! Followed by mince pies....... of course.

Mini Sandwhiches =]
Christmas is the theme <3
Christmas Games like idk if this is too kidish for you but its still fun @ any age ( i believe ) you get like a red coat and pants and boots and a hat and mb even a fake beard and you put ppl into groups... then they have to dress one person in the group as Santa, you can give out prices for first place, and if you'd like second and third.
You could get red and green balloons and put stuff in them and everyone has to pop them.
You can have sort of like an Easter Egg Christmas Hunt. You get like the arts and craft poms in Red and Green, you can also use things like fake flowers, balls, ribbons, etc. and see who gets the most.
Merry Xmas! Have a great party. <33

i would probably make veggie platters with dip, and cheese platter with crackers, maybe a fruit platter and some tuna and chicken salad, with those little breads or just quarter the sandwiches and cut off the crust, have a bowl or two of pretzels and chips, you can make punch from tri-colored sherbet some hawaiian punch and some 7-up, and have soda and water available. for games; charades or name that tune, have fun!

Christmas parties are usually finger foods unless having a dinner party. You can easily google christmas party menus. Or... go to gourmet.com and look up cocktail party, or Christmas party menus.

just make all of your food look festive - use pizzas but make them star shaped and stuff like that, and trail tinsel arond the bowls, plates, glasses etc. not sure about the games, charades perhaps? usually good for a laugh.
