ok, so, i had factory oil till mod 0'6 basically, (my father didnt do jack to maintain the truck) so i did an oil change and ran some 5-20 through it for a week to clean it out, then replaced that with some 20-40, but now all the valves chatter, and one sounds like it is sticking. could this be the valves becoming loose after the gunk was cleaned out of it? if so, what do i torque them down to?

i know i cannot adjust them, what i am asking is that if they have come loose, what do i tension them down to with a torque wrench?
i do plan on rebuilding the whole thing, but i dont have the time or cash now, so this is just to try and prevent further damage (yes, i know, bandaid on a gunshot wound)

the valves are not adjustable. they bolt down solid to the head and the lifters do the adjusting. you need to remove the oil pan, check the pickup tube. you will find it is plugged with sludge, the oil pump is worn, the bearings are worn, the cam and lifters are worn. you are going to have to replace or rebuild this engine.

I'll shoot in the dark on this one, 20-40 might be a bit high viscosity wise and causing you some problems, I wouldn't think so but maybe. I think 10-30 is the recommended oil for the 3.9, I know it is on my '92 3.9. You could change oil again and try 10-30, and if that doesn't work, time for a rebuild or replacement.

your oil ( 20-40 ) is way wrong for that engine an the valves are getting beat up cause of the poor lubrication ( the oil pump isnt designed to handle that viscosity ) drain out that oil, and pour in some good high mileage 10w30 oil. also fill up the gas tank and get a bottle of lucas fuel additive. it will help alot in getting the engine back where it needs to be.

from what i've got been delivered approximately have self assurance all oils would desire to fulfill particular standards that are meant to fulfill or exceed manufactures guarantee.confident they could be greater advantageous at doing it yet maximum manufactures nevertheless propose a 6,000 mile oil replace in the proprietors instruction manual, and everywhere i glance sellers and independents push the three,000 mile oil replace. so which you tell me? replace your oil two times as much as stated with any over-the-counter oil and what undesirable can come of this? If it replaced into my truck i could make my thank you to the keep and %. up any 10w30 oil and filter out and alter the oil. needless to say if you purchased this concern supercharged and modded out like nobodies corporation it fairly is fairly helpful to re-evaluate that, and bypass with a robust guy made.

those are non adjustable and hydraulic also, you just tighten them down and the tension is set on them, there's no adjustment to be made to them at all, good luck.,,PS just torque them down to about 40 pounds that's plenty enough to hold them,i usually go about 40-50 pounds on those that's plenty enough to hold them ,good luck.
