you should look up the breeds of different types of dogs if you are going that route towards a purebred dog mixed pups make good friends and loyal companions but there are some needs to certain breeds and dogs that have more demands then some families are willing to give labs and golden retrievers make good family pets but need a lot of attention and exercise as well as vet visits as lab and golden retrievers are prone to hip dysplasia usually the breeder you get the puppy from will have both parents tested as well as the puppies. they also need big yards to run around in don't torture your animal by putting them in small yards. but if you have an average sized yard with plenty of room for them to run around in by all means labs, golden retrievers, even border collies make great family pets just make sure you give them the love and attention they need and deserve dont just get a puppy play with it and when your tired of it leave back there just to feed it i see this happen all to often dogs are very smart and need things to keep there minds active so they dont develop bad habits such as chewing on furniture or digging. also another thing is labs can be susceptible to obesity so be careful what you feed them and that they get plenty of excercise. as to the age of the dog you want to get it all depends on how much timeand patience you are willing to put into the training of the dog if you have a lot of time to spend with your dog and your kids are little bit older a puppy is ideal as you need to be there to potty train basic obedience and so on younger children will most likely be scared of a puppy since they will jump lick and chew this is what a puppy does older dogs may become annoyed with young children pulling and tugging and may snap or growl at the children but look into the dog before you bring them home.

Rat Terriers are great for families. Get a puppy so you set the behaviors you desire in a dog. I raise them and once in a while I call the new parents to find out how they are doing and I have heard nothing but happy things about the dogs they have grown into. They travel and visit grandparents just like children do. I have even had people come back for a second puppy from us because they love the first one so much.

Long haired chihuahuas. The perfect lap dog. They're really portable( our 4 go everywhere with us). They usually weigh around 4-10 pounds. They're so CUTE!!! People who don't even like dogs like them. Make sure you get long haired chihuahuas as opposed to the short haired variety. They are known to be aggressive with people other than their owners. It's also easier for elderly people to take care of a small dog that is physically less threatening.
Just so you know, if you get one of them, you have to get another for company. They do great in pairs. They get needy when they are alone and require a play mate. Hope this helped!!!

In my opinion, a lab or a golden retriever would be your answer. I have a 10-month-old black lab with a 3-year-old and a 6-year-old niece and nephew living with me. This dog has the patience of a saint. He has had rocks thrown at him, poked with sticks, stepping on, pulled, pinched, and the like and still wags his tail.
But there is other factors with these breeds. They are big dogs and require more space and maintenance than a smaller breed would. Labs love to be on the go, love to play and run with children, and are friendly to just about everyone.

Take the whole family down (grandparents too) to the animal shelter in your area. Ask the workers there for a dog that is fairly obedient and any other criteria you would like to meet. Spend some time with the dogs they suggest and see which one matches with your family. I can almost guarantee you will find one that you want to add to your family....and I can absolutely guarantee that dog will be thrilled to become a member of a loving household!

I noticed that a lot of people put down labs, but I believe even teacup chihuahuas are great companions. I got my grandfather one a year ago and he has grown so attached to the dog that if the two are separated, they both get anxiety attacks. The good thing about chihuahuas are that they are very loyal. They stick to their owners like a shadow and is always trying to nuzzle with someone. They're great lapdogs.

well you could go to an animals shelter and have you and your whole family go, you can play with the dogs and see how they react to you and your family. othere are amny types of dogs that are great family dogs. i have a golden retreiver (i would recommend one), he is still young, but ever since he was a pup he was pretty calm and not so jumpy like other pups. they are very loving, compassionate family dogs!
i take my retreiver to the pet store, dog beach, for rides to the store, park, etc. and he is great with my grandparents! he didnt jump on them at all! but sometimes it just depends on how well u can train the pup!
if you are worryed about having a big dog jumping and having to spend more money on food dor a bigger dog (bcuz they eat more), then consider a small dog. small dogs are just as compassionate and loving.
but maybe the animals shelter would be a good idea, or take a look in your paper, see what catches your eye! its actually up to you on the age of the dog you want to buy him at. take your time choosing what breed you would like! there are so many!!
and all are such good dogs. good luck.
my grandparents owned "pomeranians" and loved them. they are small, easier to care for then a bigger dog, and they would bark any time we would come over (which shows he is a good guard dog), and you were able to play with them, very cute too!! goodl uck

I fairly have 3 Labs, and altogether 5 nieces/nephews from infant to extra beneficial youngster. They play and throw themselves on my canines and run around with them. My canines will in basic terms lay there jointly as the babies %. at him or placed hats on his head. they may be very lazy and extremely hyper. while at homestead, my canines is a significant lazy pup yet as quickly as we are out, he's everywhere. Labs are super relatives canines and there is not any distinction between the colors different than that i've got heard the yellow Labs tend to shed extra hair than the others. value tiers for the doggies oftentimes pass in this order: black, yellow, brown. Black is the main worry-loose and brown the least so brown Labs oftentimes value on the better ingredient. yet besides, there are various Lab rescues and Labs in shelters because of the fact of over breeding as a results of their acceptance.

I find that labs and golden retrievers make excellent family pets for about everything. They are well behaved, train easy, and are big enough to take the romping of the little ones.

I noticed a lot of people answered with Labs - but I know of a black lab who would always steal grandmas food when dinner was served - poor grandma didn't eat much - she wasn't quick enough!
