I've noticed a lot of people do this? They'll type veg*an instead of vegan. Why do they do that?

It is because they are using the term "veg*an" as an abbreviation of "vegetarian", they are not trying to say "vegan". There is a difference between vegan and vegetarian. Vegans will not eat ANY animal products whatsoever. Vegetarians (or veg*ans) will eat some fish, dairy products and eggs.

They don't type it instead of "vegan." They type it instead of "vegetarian and/or vegan." It's shorthand for both, because the * is a wild characted for the "a" in vegan or the "etaria" in vegetarian. It's just an easy way to refer to one or both with less typing.

I use it has a short cut for the term veg(a)n or/and veg(etaria)n, it becomes annoying then I have to type both out. If I want to use one I will type it out in full, but most commonly it will mean that your taking about both. The people on such sites as www.peta2.org will use it alot in this way.

Veg*n (or veg*an) is shorthand for "vegetarian and/or vegan." The asterisk is a wild-card operator that stands in for any number of characters or none at all.

It's shorthand for 'vegetarian and/or vegan'. So someone addressing a question to 'veg*ns' wants answers from both vegetarians and vegans.
Someone will probably be along to tell you it's laziness (someone usually does when this question's asked), but it's no lazier than using 'can't' instead of 'cannot'.

The vegers here use that as an all inclusive word for vegans and vegetarians.
Artist might have that part right but is incorrect about vegetarians eating fish. Vegetarians do NOT eat ANY animal flesh.

Veg*n stands for both vegan and vegetarian and is easier to type than "veg(etari)an" or "vegans and vegetarians".

Although a vegan is a type of strict vegetarian, use of veg*an is useful when you want to differentiate between the two and yet include them together. Hope this makes sense. A similar usage is (s)he when you want to refer to both "he" and "she".

veg*n means vegetarian and its quicker than typing it all out. for vegan we just write vegan
