I am a preschool teacher. My director recently enrolled an almost 4 year old boy who is not potty trained. He will only go pee when asked to, and has an absolute tantrum when asked to sit on the toilet to go poop. I'm tired of cleaning him, and this behavior cannot continue. He is taking away from my time with the other 11 children in my classroom who are all 3 and ALL potty trained completely. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you in advance to any suggestions.

ok, Wise One, you don't sound too wise. You have obviously never worked in preschool, or potty trained a child. How about you find another category to anser under.

usually peer pressure gets kids to learn to potty properly.

however, there is a potential issue with a 4 year old who has not yet learned ... he may have either a physical or psychological issue that is beyond your competence. Having this tested for is the parents' responsibility but will need to be suggested by your Director.

The worst is if a child isn't diagnosed before entering school and needs special supports. Without the knowledge the testing delivers, he could enter school with no one knowing he is eligible for special education [IF he is ... which isn't guaranteed] and then he wouldn't get assistance until he was clearly failing school. Children in such cases have little chance of catching up academicly.

Well, I am very surprised the director took the child but he must be either having some bowel problems or has been forced to sit on the potty in the past and those 2 things usually go together. I would talk to the parents and find out whats been going on in the past. find out: if he has been to the Dr? If not, suggest it. Does he have frequent constipation? hard stools? is he getting enough fiber in his diet? has he been forced to sit on the potty? I still wouldn't force him to. He will be5 or 6 with the same problem. Keep asking him to pee every hour & hopefully he won't poop every single day. if you think he has to poop ask him if he wants to and if he says no, then just let him poop his pants or put a pull up on him. I would rather change a diaper or pull up rather than having to clean up poopy pants. Once he is calm try to talk to him and find out why he is scared. He may be having some real problems. He could even be withholding which leads to even bigger problems and more pain for him. try to be patient but I understand how fruastrating that would be. I didn't know any preschool would take a child over 3 that was not fully trained.
good luck.

I own a preschool/daycare and children cannot move up to the three/four year old room until they are potty trained. If you do not have a diaper changing area and sink in your classroom then your director should not allow him in there for sanitary reasons. I would speak to the director first and share your concerns in an unemotional way (not "I am sick of cleaning him up!" but "This is taking too much time away from the children, it is unsanitary, etc."). It is the PARENTS job to potty train their children, you can only provide support.

I've seen children like this in preschool who a late toilet trainers. Try and work with his parents and find out what they do at home - work together on his training. Set up a similar technique.

But actually the range of toileting control is around 2 1/2 years old. So he's pretty normal.

Kids that age respond to rewards - maybe a special sticker, a star chart, lots of PRAISE, what would he consider a reward.

Do they have PULLUPS in your part of the world?

The main thing is to check when he feels the fullness feeling in his bladder or
realises he is soiled or about to soil
then he can reach the toilet before it escapes.

My daughter was potty trained by the time she was 2. I let her wear pull ups to bed only. We had the potty chair in the hallway because she waited until the last seconded to go and never made it in time. I treated her like a big kid. They also have things to put in the toilet and have them to pee on them. Since your child has a delay then it may be a while. My sitters daughter has Downs syndrome and she is still not potty train and she is almost 6. Children with delays take along time to potty train. When they get to school it is a lot easier because their Friends are all potty trained. Maybe your son just needs more time.

Does he have to be in preschool? If it's not required, I'd notify his parents that he is not ready. It may be a power struggle for him, or his way of getting attention (although negative ). Praise him for things he does well, like helping put things away, sharing, listening, etc. Maybe he doesn't get this at home, and rebels.

Well, Mary what you need to do is let him poop his pants on his own. Maybe then will he not throw a tantrum next time he is asked to go to the bathroom because he will know what it feels like to be soiled.

If you can't get rid of him, let him sit in his crappy pants all day. 4 year olds know exactly what's going on. If he gets to stinkin, sit him in the far corner.
