I was reading the other day, that if you were to join the Marines, which I am planning on doing, that they could switch you from your choice of field and put you into infantry without your consent. I've never heard of that happening in any branch. Is this true? When I graduate from college, would they throw me into infantry with all of their money invested in my training?

I talked to a recruiter today and he said that it is illegal for them to switch you from one place to another unless you sign an open contract.

okay, here's the deal.. any militray contract, regardless of Branch can guarantee you TRAINING in a specific field. After that, needs of the military prevail. does it happen? yes. is it common, NO. they are NOT about to spend thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars training you to operate some fancy piece of equipment then turn around and turn you into cannon fodder. You can expect, however to do some things outside of your career field at some point. they may be extraneous duties in addition to your MOS/Rating/AFSC, or they could be in lieu of that.

Sounds like you will be an officer then? If so, it is possible that you will be in the infantry. At the end of your OCS the top man will have his pick of all the open slots.. then the 2nd best man and on and on. You may be stuck with infantry.
When I enlisted in 1999, you either signed a contract that stated your MOS on it, or you signed an open contract. The open contract meant that they would place you where you are most needed. Some are made to think that signing an open contract will get them what they want later, but that is a mistake. They become line cooks or infantry. Because of the war, they may have changed the rules. Ask someone in MEPS if you are really concerned.

The Marine Corps is unique. As with their belief that God comes first, Country Comes second and the Corps comes third. Nothing else is important. In the Corps you are a Marine FIRST, a rifleman second, and whatever your job is third. If you are called upon by the Commandant to fight on the line besides your other Marines you will do so. Without hesitation. They aren't going to reclassify you into another job, but you will go where the Corps needs you regardless of specialized training.
If you graduate from college and become an officer you fall into a whole new world of wierdness. I know nothing about USMC officer processes so I hope someone else here can step up and answer that part.
Cheers!

While on Recruiters Assistance I read the fine print on the contract and it said that an enlistees mos can be changed for the good of the service. So if they gauranteed you to be a truck driver( a 3500 mos) they can switch it before your tech school to something needed. They can also involuntarily lat move you to another mos during your contract if there is a shortage.
While in my primary mos was 0311( infantry). The corps wound up short motor T mechanics. I scored very high on the mechanical section of the ASVAB test. Guess what, I was sent to school and my mos was changed to 3521( motor t mechanic.). Even after I told the admin chief I wasn't interested.

Yes, it happens all the time. When you sign on you agree to serve where the Corps needs you, not necessarily where you want to be. While they are less likely to toss you into infantry if you're trained for a technical specialty, there are no guarantees. You should also know, if they haven't told you already, that *EVERY* Marine is expected to be combat capable; for all intents and purposes, they're all trained to infantry standards with some taking on specialized roles.

It is called "needs of the Corps" and EVERY marine is a rifleman first and foremost.
Your MOS is your primary concern, but you can be told to report to a front-line unit at anytime if your performance slips or they just need more bodies for an assault or defence of the post.
