immediately corrected with surgery because:

a. the hole will cause the flow of blood to reverse in the heart.
b. the hole will allow blood to leak out of the heart and the child could bleed to death
c. the hole will cause blood to flow in the reverse direction back into veins instead of the arteries.
d. the hole allows mixing both oxygenated and deoxygenated blood which reduces oxygen delivery to tissues

Having been born with an atrial septal defect which you mentioned. I didn't have surgery until I was 5. I would imagine it is (d) since the cause of this was that I would grow tired very quickly as my heart had trouble delivering oxygen to my body.

my daughter was born with both oxygen and blood being directed into the same chamber. she had a small hole, which saved her life. she had surgery to correct the problem, but the drs left the hole between the ventricles. she is now 21 and feeling fine.
