Look on the list of ingredients. If it contains milk solids, any form of animal fat, or any form of casein (drived from milk), then there are traces of animal sources in it.
However, many vegans do not use margarine because they object to hydrogenation of oils, necessary to produce stick or tub margarines and shortening. They often prefer olive oil or the like as a spread, or a vegetable spread from their own recipes.

Bottom line, margerine is bad for you. It is hydrogenated and actually worse than butter mainly for this reason. It is very hard for our bodies to digest hydrogenated oils of any kind.
The Earth Balance mentioned above is actually what I use. I love it.

You should've gotten a list of similar questions when you asked this one. http://answers.yahoo.com/search/search_result;_ylt=Auun3CrqlksTzL12GpZTB0gnzKIX;_ylv=3?ps=1&p=margarine&pn=&scope=subject&mc=396545367&mc=396546874&fltr=_en&tab=0&asktime=&save_search=1&st=1
It depends. Read the ingredients. Some have whey, buttermilk, cream, etc.
Edit: Lynnea, hydrogenation of oils has nothing to do with veganism.

No, but what is? Do you what percentage of "natural" soil contains animal remains nowadays?
What percentage of the veggies you eat contain matter of animal origin?
You would be surprised.
