Chocolate is NOT a meat. Chocolate is amazing and I love it. If you were vegan though, milk chocolate is not an option. Chocolate is something you can eat though. I have 3 vegetarian friends and they eat chocolate ALL of the time! We all love chocolate.

Yes, chocolate is vegetarian (if it's a candy bar with other ingredients besides chocolate, you might want to check whether there's gelatin hiding in there, though.) If you've cut out milk as well as meat, then you can still have most dark chocolate (some has milk) and "milk" chocolate made with rice milk, for example.

There are plenty of excellent dark chocolates without any butter or milk that are suitable for vegans! They are readily available in mainstream stores all over the place. Even suburban petrol (gas) stations & 7-11's here sell small and large bars of plain Lindt dark chocolate, Green & Black's, those mint-chip sugar free ones that are delicious, etc. There's Droste pastilles in the major supermarkets. Just check the ingredients first. Even in my carnivorous days, I'd have told you they are way-superior (for chocophiles) to milk chocolate!!!

I am a strict vegetarian and made my own chocolate tonight!
I made blueberry truffles by grinding together (in a high-powered blender - Vita-Mixer) the following...
coconut oil
carob powder
cashews
maca (a super food!)
cinnamon
dried blueberries
agave nectar
I rolled them into balls and rolled them in coconut or cocoa powder. They are DELICIOUS! Not only are they vegan, but I used all raw ingredients so they'd be of the optimum nutrition.

I also buy Green & Black's maya gold dark chocolate - so good.

Sure. There's even vegan chocolate (why companies feel compelled to put milk in dark chocolate is beyond me) available. Tropical Source, Dagoba, Endangered Species, Equal Exchange, and several other companies make vegan chocolate bars. Check out www.veganstore.com and www.veganessentials.com for vegan chocolates. Rose City Chocolatier even has a line of vegan chocolates.

Go for the fair trade stuff.

Well it isn't an essential but it can be eaten on a vegetarian diet because i'm sure they don't use animal fats and there are also many stages of chocolate. Just vegans can't but they can eat the cacao beans which have been ground up and rolled. And they can also eat specially made foods.

Yes and vegan too. Chocolate is not made with dairy.
Only Milk Chocolate is.
I prefer carob as chocolate has too much caffeine for me -- keeps me awake at night.

Yes, on a vegetarian diet it is.
On a vegan diet - chances are that it isn't. Due to it containing milk. Vegans don't eat, in addition to no meat, animals products such as milk, honey, eggs.

Yes, you can eat chocolate if you're a vegetarian. If you're a vegan, you can't, really, because it has milk in it. Don't worry, though, if you're just vegetarian, that delicious food is still on your menu.
