pigs would destroy the environments they were released in, harming native plants and disrupting the food chain, cows would slowly starve or get hit by cars killing many people, I think chickens would have trouble finding food in an urban environment but in the countryside many would survive.

Hey, I won't trample your vegetables if you don't bother my cows. I'm a meat eater. Get over it.

First of all, they're omnivores, not carnivores. A carnivore only eats meat. Unless you misinterpreted Fatkins diet guidelines, you're probably an omnivore.

Second, I strongly doubt vegetarianism will take over THAT quickly. So here's what will happen: As more and more people stop eating animals, fewer will be bred. Remember, 10 billion animals in the U.S. (a total of 50 billion worldwide) are bred, mutilated, fattened, etc., and slaughtered every year. Yes, bred; animals do not naturally get pregnant that often. So fewer animals will be bred because people aren't eating them. And fewer cows will be inseminated because people aren't drinking the milk that's for their baby cows. And fewer hens will be crammed in cages because people are forgoing eggs.

Eventually (we can dream), we'll get to a point where animals are not constantly overbred and some can actually breed naturally. And hopefully, there will be places where these animals can go for care; there already are several sanctuaries for farm animals around the U.S. I don't know if we'll ever be able to truly have wild animals, but at least we can make sure that cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, goats, and sheep have good lives.

There would be no overpopulation of food animals, as most people would think, because they would not be bred excessively. I think our wold would be cleaner and healthier, and doctor bills would be WAY down. Resurants would be SO easy to order from, and there would be no such thing as "fishing." Instead of having 55 doctors in a hospital, there would be 30, since nobody would come in for malnutrition or food poisoning. The would would be a dream, and the dream would be a reality. This is what I've been trying to convince people of for the longest time, and if people just GOT this, our lives would be a WHOLE LOT easier. Wow. Thanks for asking! I never really thought of that! =)

First off, half of the answers in here are absolutely ridiculous.

The world would be better off if everyone converted to a vegetarian diet. Period.

Don't be stupid. No person that respects other people's freedom of choice would even try to convince a vegetarian to eat meat nor a carnivore to turn veg! Grow up.

The dairy cows would be in desperate pain with infections in their teats due to not being milked. The goats and sheep would wander around getting attacked by dogs and wolves. The chickens would be slaughered on the road and by pet cats. Get real! Animals have been genetically altered by their experience as farm animals. Nature ain't pretty.
