He's only 28 years old and had these episodes where his heart beats really fast but it usually doesn't last that long.
The doctors can't figure out what's causing it but today the heart rate went as high as 300 beats/minute. He's been having chest pains this past week also. Today he was admited to the ER and was given Beta-Blockers and that slowed it down but not below 200 beats/minute though.
Has anyone experience this or knows what's going on?

He wasn't taking any medications b/4 being admitted to the hospital today.
They're keeping him there for the next week to do all sorts of tests and find out what's going on.

Could be panic attacks. Especially if it returns to a normal rate within a short time. Hopefully the doctors admitted him and will run some tests. He needs a thorough physical and heart study done.

I have had this problem in the past, called tacycardia (fast heart rate) can be harmless or dangerous. Mine was caused by pregancy (somewhat common) but not the case with your brother. Any time a person has chest pain it needs to be checked out. and besides I remember how scared I was when my heart beat fast - he too must be scared. This needs to have the attention of an md. I know you said that the mds don't know whats going on and sometimes they don't but it can be controlled with the right medication. He needs to a cardiologist (heart md) and find out the answers. Tell him to keep his chin up and find a doctor that will work with him to find these answers. Good luck and have a great life, both of you. And bravo to you for being so concerned.

Is he taking any meds? Decongestants? Drinking caffiene regularly? Even hot sauce and red pepper can make your pulse go up some. The beta blockers will not do too much immediately. His pulse should come down over the next couple of days. I'm sure he will have an appointment with his doctor. Encourage him to stay away from caffiene, spicy foods, and cold medications. Also, he should take it easy and not exercise too much until the doctors figure it out.

I wouldn't say, if I knew, because this is too serious for this type of site. He needs to ask these questions of his doctor, or you go with him and find out. Don't play with health; he is having a heart problem and needs to focus on that, not on what we think. My prayers are with you.
